Germany rumoured to print Marks

correction, we just *hope* it happens the Eu is a bit OTT and a bit smug atm they do need to wake up

* I don't like the EU much :p*

GERMANY is rumoured to be printing Deutschemark banknotes again in preparation for ditching the euro and distancing itself from Greece and the other ailing states that started the sovereign debt crisis.
Forgive me, but I thought that was the whole point of the European Union.

I'm also at a loss for how poor some journalists spelling and/or grammar is.

EDIT: Just for clarification, I'm very strongly pro-European, I'm just not quite as enthusiastic about the EU (if that makes sense).

again I see the point in all of Europe being united, but the EU seems to take that a little too far as I think that the EU trys to take over every country as such. I think each country has a national identity which the EU don't seem to accept. All the European counties supporting each other is a great idea but its also a bad one. also being under one currancy helps when going between these counties

thats just my option, I ve never seen germany benifit from the Euro much

The whole point of the Euro was so us Brits could use 1 currency while on holiday. I would be very disappointed if we were left out of any decisions Germany is thinking of making to its currency.

my parents have a fair bit of euros since they own a house in france and are restoring it. I told them while it was at 1 - 1 to get there euros to £ they are thanking me now :)

Story is fail and lacks the basic tenets of plausability, even for a rumour.

Why?

To me it makes sense. Printing notes doesn't mean Germany will pull out, they could just be making a contingency fund. Print a load of Marks just in case in the nearish future they decide they really do need to pull out.

Bit like nuclear deterrent, it sits there doing "nothing", hopefully never being used, but if everything goes up ***** creek you'll be glad you did it (kept the deterrent or printed marks...)

I don't really buy into that, a step like printing Marks seems far too much of a serious step to take just as a contingency. Imagine if there was a more credible source to back this information up? there would be real trouble.

DING DONG THE ***** IS DEAD!*

On a serious note I would hate to see what a great big mess the markets will turn into if Germany does walk away, its like have a house of cards then setting fire to the whole thing as opposed to just pulling out the bottom card.

*The bitch being Europe. Never particularly liked the Eurozone.

The diplomatic, economic, and political processes required for this would move far, far more slowly than the hypothetical situation you seem to be alluding to where Germany would have to 'secretly' print Deutschmarks 'just in case'. And this is in the event where the federal government decides to take this option, and there are many domestic and international reasons why they would not.

Basically the article seems to follow the typical methodology of the gutter press, taking a largely symbolic headline of a general contemporary issue with little factual or even theoretical basis (as in even if Germany wanted to pull out of the Euro, this scenario of 'underground printing presses' is laughable). It's effective nonetheless however, going by the initial replies to this thread.
