Dark grey suit...what colour shirt?

I am yet to meet a girl who thinks brown shoes look good :p you should wear black shoes.

Really? I've met quite a few who think that they look good, in fact it was often one of the first things that was mentioned to me about what I was wearing but they were Canadian so maybe that explains the lack of taste... ;) Although I don't know if brown shoes would suit here or not.

A nice pale blue shirt as has already been suggested would probably go quite well but try it out first and see for yourself.

//edit I should perhaps say that what I know about style could be written on the head of a pin.

Post a picture of yourself wearing the suit in a white shirt. The photoshoppers will do the rest...

Of course it could be several pages of you wearing themes on electric pink and glittery ties before you see anything you like!

Yes this is an attempt to turn this into a photoshop thread! :D

Brown shoes are a bit more European than British, I think it works though. Adds a certain extra dimension and makes it a bit different to the enslaught of black shoes.

Though, you must remember to match your belt! (That's about the only thing I know about fashion, match belt and shoes).

I always wear a pale blue shirt with a dark blue tie with my charcoal grey suit, looks smart and professional.

I wear brown shoes with my light grey suit and it looks fine, what's with the brown shoe hatred :/

Summer ball = 'Black Tie Event' = Dress your A*se off

White Shirt + Silver/Grey Tie, Black shoes.

Please don't go with pale pink, you will look like you work for Phones4U

ROFL. That made smile. Know plenty of chaps in The City on £70k+ who all work at Phones4u?

Pink and Other flamboyant colours are the shirts of choice my friend. :)

Yes but not to a black tie event! For work (sometimes and depends who you work for) and casual occasions, flamboyant shirts are an idea, but OP said he is going to a Summer Ball, which to me i would imagine is more of an Black Tie Event, so classic and safe is what i would choose!

Every man should own at least one good suit, two good belts (1 black and 1 brown) and two good pairs of shoes (also black and brown). As said, always match the belt to the shoes. Also, always wear a belt whether you need it or not.

The general rule with a grey suit is to not go for a darker shirt than the suit colour. White is boring but dependable, blues will work very well, as will yellows and pinks. Avoid the garish colours unless you can carry it off; most people can't.

Finally, you should be wearing a tux or kilt to a ball, not a suit.

White shirt would look good.

and what's with everyone saying about brown shoes  that would look horrible lol

Christ. I missed that. I do apologise. In that case, Summer ball ONLY black tie. Don't stand out like sore thumb. Might sound snooty but when I was at Notts people looked (and then felt) uncomfortable if the turned up in anything but black tie to a formal event.
