Number plate fell off

But whats to stop someone ripping that plate of a car they like, ringing the garage to get the details and then going round to steal the key and make of with the car? Its illegal, if you still want to use them have a polite word, they are professionals, they should act like it!

i agree, go speak to them, its not good!

So I'm not sure whether to be annoyed with the garage. Technically they broke the law, but because its only a small place I don't feel so keen to cause trouble. I go there quite a lot and deal with the owner usually and I expect it was him that handed over the details.

who says you have to cause trouble ?

its entirely down to the way you handle it. Chances are, the manager is very much aware of the data protection laws, and would be horrified to hear that his staff are handing out identifiable private customer data to people who are not entitled to view it.

Go to them with the complaint, but dont be all shouty and snotty about it. Somebody's made a mistake, and all your doing is making sure that mistake doesn't go un-noticed.

Maybe not a criminal offence but you can still be fined for it and depending on the officers mood 6 points on your licence

agreed

but by comparison disclosing confidential data and breeching the data protection act IS.

Committing a criminal offence to save somebody a motoring offence is daft, especially when the criminal offence could be avoided just by ... calling him themselves, instead of getting the woman to do it.

Don't the DVLA themselves hand out keeper information for a small fee?

only to people they deem to have a need for it

its not a case of "heres £10 so i can clone his plates plz"

An individual wanting to return a lost item wouldnt get the data from the DVLA.

Everyone is going mad on data protection.. what use is your address? I can walk down the road and get someone's address and their car reg...

with 1 in 10 PC's having a virus, TK max loosing 80million credit card details, untold laptops being lost with god knows what on someone knowing you address is about as trivial as it gets...

the lady has his address... what use is that... considering his PC probably sent all his details to rissia, his insurance company lost his details on a laptop, the indian call center guy sold his cc details to a guy in china... someone went thru his rubbish and has all his bank details.... and thanks to ID theft his is wanted for insurance fraud, traffice offences and unpaid loans in half of the countries in the EU..

the only reason I would NOT want someone with my number plate to get my address would be if I had had some sort of accident and done a runner... (but then it would be a police matter)

If you are the kind of scum that steal cars, then getting the owners address from a plate could be very valuable information. Would you be quite happy to give your own address to anyone who asked you?

Lol to be honest if someone was that interested in stealing a specific car they would just go to autotrader.co.uk, type in the car they wanted and could even choose a colour and then call and ask if it was still for sale and what address it was at as they were interested in viewing it. I could go to the website now and find loads of local Skodas if I wanted. Why would I go through the hassle of tracking down a numberplate?

There are a lot of easier ways to track down a certain type of car they want to steal than ripping off a number plate, going personally into the dealer to speak to someone, then calling from a landline number that is registered to the shop they own.

It sounds to me like a case of small businesses in a local area who know each other just trying to be helpful to a customer. YES it does happen even in the modern world! Yes officially they broke the law, but I personally wouldn't be bothered.

Indeed strange, the correct method would be for the dealer to take it and contact you themselves, could've made a happy customer. But salesmen are lazy.
