Apple is now bigger than Microsoft

Most people probably like Microsoft because they allow them to do their job in offices or wherever compared to the handful of people who work on macs.

Yeah like most people get a choice about which OS they use at work?

I wouldn't really take anything you said credibly though, as you seem to think an iPhone is "a bit more special" than an Android phone, which is quite frankly, one of the most incorrect and amusing things I have ever read.

You must live a pretty sad life then.

The guy next to me at work (and a few others in the office) has a HTC Desire, the latest in a long series of iPhone killers, and to be fair, it appears to be a very good phone but you know what he spends most of his time doing? Largely useless tinkering, coming out with stuff such as "oh if I kill the clock.exe I get an extra 20 minutes of battery life, the only problem is my alarm clock doesn't come on any more". Seriously why? If that is what multi-tasking is all about then I don't want it. I just use my 3GS in useful or fun ways, like reading the Guardian on the train to work or playing Angry Birds.

Microsoft operating systems are still built on DOS

Your knowledge of the Windows platform seems to be somewhat lacking. No versions of Windows from XP onwards have been built on DOS, they are built on the NT kernel which is completely different. DOS is not included with 7, only powershell which emulates certain DOS commands.

Someone doing "largely useless tinkering" does not represent the entire user base.

There is very little to represent the iPhone userbase in that respect and how they use the phone as the only customisation you can do to it (without voiding any warranty etc) is basically limited to apps.

I'd say 95% of Apps are things you could do with a web browser (albeit, the iPhone one is poor), but people will pay blindly for them due to how they are marketed, it's not far off scamming to be honest :)

Oh, and with regard to your "I've got an iPhone, you need to get a life" remark, I was obviously speaking from a technology standpoint and not in general, but I wouldn't expect a tunnel vision Apple fan to get that ;)

People who are considering buying an iPhone nowadays just stink of ignorance, they either have no idea why their buying other than they assume it's still cool to own one or they're so stupidly and blindly loyal to Apple that they'll buy any old crap that's released, even if it's only a minor rehash to years old technology.

People who assume others are ignorant are usually more ignorant..

Iphone looks nice and works as a phone, camera, music player and is easy to use these are the main features people want, its all very well saying X is more powerful or Y is cheaper but a few £100 is nothing to most poeple and most people are not interesting the how powerful their phone is as long as it does the main jobs they want...

personally i dont have an iphone because I cannto justify the cost and I only use my blackberry for calls and email.. however I totally understant why somene would choose an iphone over another phone... if only because it looks so nice...

I have enjoyed this thread with my popcorn so far.

My opinion is that macs suck, over priced and pointless machines... I actually don't buy anything that is white for fear that other people may think I am a trendy homo - I have never bought anything from Apple or resembles Apple and never will.

I have used macs all throughout my design qualification and I hated them.. give me a windows pc anyday.

Good for you.

I disagree.

I'd rather spend £2k on a Mac Pro than £1k on a PC any day of the week, infact, I did.

I'm not stupid with money therefore all this **** about fanboyism or "pointless machines" or what not is total and utter ****.

Why the hell do I have to be branded as a "fanboy" when i've used both systems for all my life and prefer OS X and the simplicity of things all working together.
MobileMe = One login means Mac Pro, MacBook Pro and iPhone have all the same data. Perfect. Set and forget all the way.

Networking in Windows 7 is ridiculous. Printer installation is long winded too.
TWO CLICKS and I had my printer and file sharing setup. THATS why I have a mac, don't want to bugger about.

People need to get some perspective to be honest.

Edit: Oh and I have windows installed so I can use it for games and CAD - Therefore I use both OSes for their good points.

Edit 2: Thread should be closed, descended into a OS X vs Win argument again.

You know what they say, simple things for simple people ^_~

Kidding :p

The Mac gaming issue is slowly turning for the better as valve release STEAM for Mac (and Linux) and hopefully we see ported A-rank titles instead of standard ones.

Still, I still wouldn't buy a piece of hardware overseen by Lord Jobs and be told what I can and can't do with my hardware whenever I want however I want. This is where Android and Windows changes the whole gameplan for power users in my book.

In Microsoft's defence the manufacturers of the printers are the problem. Making bloated, bug-ridden software not fit for purpose.

Imagine the joy if they all stuck to a single specification, but no. Gits...

And I will agree with you about push-button networking on apples. For your laymen user it is considerably simpler.

Edit: oh by "specification" I mean proper standardisation of software.

Well Apple has managed it somehow? :/ Although I *think* thats because they write their own drivers.

I'm far far FAR from a laymen user but when something should be simple and it isn't it gets very frustrating, very quickly.

Infact with W7 it was quicker to download a PDF maker (WTF is this? Why can't windows make PDFs by standard!?) and then copy it to OS X to be printed.

Thank you for validating my argument that people only buy Apple kit because "it looks nice"

Sorry just noticed this but you're completely wrong on both counts.

I'm the sysadmin for a large company and have over the last 2 months been setting up new HP and Toshiba laptops for our field engineers with Windows 7 Pro installed and networking has actually been BETTER than on Windows XP. Sure there's a little configuration required to get it exactly how I want users to connect but that's normal for any admin setting their users up.

Stuff like logging in no longer requires you to select the domain you're logging in to, just type your user name and the domain is auto selected be it local or work network and I have seen no trouble with VPN connectivity either. if anything it's all faster and more reliable. Just getting our people out in the field used to Windows 7 has proven the most difficult as they like to whinge when they can't find something :p

As for printers, it's exactly the same as XP with the bonus of having a centralised Device centre to manage all connected hardware. Again, no problems connecting and printing either internally or over VPN to local printers.

I agree with you there, only a mug would spend an extra £1K because they can't work out how to install a printer or set up simple networking.

I'm sorry do you have some irrational hatred for people with Apple equipment?

Just so we can get this across clearly.

I PREFER OS X TO DO WORK ON.

Just because you don't think it's worth spending x more on a Apple product doesn't mean people who have (now 15 years experience) of using both, building self hardware and doing god knows what with systems should be put down by you.

My money. My time. My choice.

OS X > Windows for what I do. End of.

Christ why can't some people accept this point. Or is that the reason why they come up with "Fanboy" because they can't get their very possibly narrow minded heads around the fact other people want different things.

Thats in a Corporate/Large Network environment, Im more talking about at home :) I have naff all idea about corporation setups ;)

I'll be sure to pass that post onto my mate. I'm sure he'll be impressed at the benchmark figures you've obtained from customising your Desire ;)

True but most web sites are designed for viewing on a monitor, not a tiny smart phone screen. I could for example read the Guardian website on Safari for free, but it's too much of a pain constantly scrolling around and zooming in and out, so I was quite happy to pay a couple of quid to make reading it a lot easier. How much the apps cost are a matter for the developer however, not Apple.

Oh, and with regard to your "I've got an iPhone, you need to get a life" remark, I was obviously speaking from a technology standpoint and not in general, but I wouldn't expect a tunnel vision Apple fan to get that ;)

I made no such remark. If you truly think that labelling the iPhone as something a bit special is the funniest thing you've ever heard, then you really are a sad git lol :p

you forgot to add 'and does the job its supposed to'...

I hate mac's if all my customers got them i'd be in trouble... I could say byebye to reinstalls, de-virusing and upgrades.

some non IT dood even brought a copy of their OS from PC world and managed to install it to recover his OS himself... I thought he would at least come unstuck with drivers... but no.. it jsut worked.... lost me £80 rebuild fee... bloody apple... hence I like my customer to by PC's...

(WTF is this? Why can't windows make PDFs by standard!?)

Adobe owns the rights to the creation of PDFs and Microsoft doesn't want to increase the price of the windows license by lumbering every user with licenses that most of them don't need.

Hang on, isn't like Windows more expensive than OS X already?

Oh wait, yes it is.

Snow Leopard: £25 (£40 for 5 user family pack)
Windows 7 Home Premium: £92.99 retail (T-W-O)

I think Microsoft could reduce their profits a tad to include PDF creation, no?
