How is it that I'm paying £600 when my previous bill (from December to February) was only around £200? We live in a 3 bedroom flat with three people, 1 TV, 1 PC, with a modern boiler and only had the heating on for about 4hrs a day during the cold weather, and it's been off for about the last month.

The electricity is £200 of the bill, which seems extremely high, considering that it was less than half that.

I'm going to have to pay it, but I can't help wondering why it's so damn high. I haven't changed my usage at all.

Is it an estimated bill?

If so, read all meters and phone the company with the correct readings.

Is it estimated readings. Can’t you just ring them up with the correct readings and get a new bill?

Nope and nope. We had the meter read last week. It was estimated before, but the discrepancy was only 1.022. I'll check the meter when I get home, but it's a small hope that he got it wrong.

Setup monthly DD's for your gas & electricity, and phone them up to give meter readings every 2 months or so, they'll adjust your DD accordingly.

Much better way to pay utility bills, instead of getting huge whoppers every few months

We have just had a £450 bill for just electric for the last quarter is that high then?

Yes,

When I was working from home full time with 2 CRT monitors on most of the day our monthly usage was £60, or £180 a quarter. When I got an LCD monitor managed to get that down to around £35-£40 a month (within the last 12 months that was, so fairly recent prices).

This could really come round and bite you in the ass at some point.

I keep trying every now and then. In fact I got a letter this morning saying they want to come and change my meter for the 7th time and I need to ring up and make an appointment.

Who knows, they might actually get it sorted this time. In the meantime, the money has been building up nicely in an ISA. ;)

Is now a good time to point out I haven;t had an electric bill for 7 years now? :D

I used to work at an electricity company, we were bought out by a massive one. Three of us IT guys went to one of their main offices. The guy there in charge of the migration told us that they had about 15,000 unkown mpans.

Basically all they have in their system is the ID of the meter, but they have no idea where the meter is, or who it is registered to.

-These people all get free electricity because no one knows where they are, so can't turn them off.

They have free energy until they call up to register with a company, then give a new 'first' reading.

ahem , sounds very familiar, im pretty sure i know which company your from :)

Its not quite that easy to get completely lost, its more the companies not being proactive enough to chase down the missing data and start contacting customers, but theres a lot of holes and crevices in the open market. Ultimately ( as a domestic customer) if you can show the company has been at fault then they can only back date upto a years energy.
