Hey folks.

Just had an electricity bill through for the last 6 months. We moved into our flat 12 months ago and the meter supposidly read by the letting agent at 3835, the estimate for the first 6 months showed an estimate of 4905. I never checked the meter. Now i've had my second bill through showing that it was read 3 days ago at 4021. So in the last 12 months its gone from 3835 up to 4021, meaning that ive spent £27 in a year. I've just checked the meter myself (finally!) and it is reading 4040. Surely that cant be right?

I live with the missus in a 2 betroom flat. We both work during the day and so only really use electricity at night, and then it is between the pc, xbox and the tele. We also use the shower, dishwasher from time to time and thats about it. We're fairly careful to turn the tele and such off at the wall at the end of the night. But surely £27 for 12 months is miles miles too cheap. Our account with N power is currently £307 in credit as we have been paying by direct debit.

Just wondering what I should do now, is it worth ringing N power to talk see what they say or should I just sit back and leave it, as going from the meters it is about right?

Thanks for your advice :)

Well its not a case of complaining, its more a case of not wanting to get bitten in the arse in a few months time. Plus if it is plausable then i want my £307 back as it would go well towards a new tele in time for the world cup. However if theres no hope in hell that its right i dont want to alert them to their mistake ;)

SherberT, nothing on the meter mate, first time i actually looked at it was today, it looks exactly the same as the 5 meters besides it. I take it that a magnet slows it down or something of the sort?

Wouldn't just sit back and leave it, something's not right somewhere and it'll bite you eventually. 186kw in 12 months is only 0.51kw a day... that's like having your pc (literally just your pc, no lights etc) for a couple of hours.

one of 2 situations.

1) as above, your being billed on the wrong meter - is the meter for your flat in the flat itself? if so make sure the meter on your bills is the same meter serial number - if communal, nip down and check the reads on all of them - then get the mrs to put the kettle on, you'll notice one start clocking a little faster than the others (unless someone in another flat does it at the same time :p )

2) the letting agency gave the wrong read, in which case dont worry about it as they have essentially paid your bill for you (if it was empty before you moved in - otherwise the old tenant may have gotten stiffed for it)

Either way, i wouldnt worry about it, your letting agency read the meter for you and its written in your contract (mine was when i first moved in) and then you read your meter six months later and you find out you havent used much but being a non technical minded person you think alls well i must just have not used much leccy.

Dont know where u legally stand if you have been undercharged, your contract reading should be pretty steadfast in terms of legality so whatever follows from then on is anyones game, someone with experiance in this field would be a good addition to the thread!

What if you were a little old lady who could barely understand her remote for the tv let alone making sence of meter readings(obviously reading them and sending them off but not know what they meant), how would you stand then?

Card meters. Pay £10 for a card. When it runs out get another for a tenner. Even batty old ladies can cope with that.

Or theres always candles.
