Hey

Driving home after work and my car is making a ticking noise.

I check my car out, and the oil is very very low. Filled her up now, but the engine only had around 50% of the oil it should have. There are no leaks ie, oil on the floor.

What could be causing my oil to burn away?

Luckily my car is fine, or so it seems.

Possibly some seals in the engine could have been damaged that it gets burned up in small quantities along with the petrol, noticed any increase in exhaust "smoke"? But at a slow rate might not be noticable.

Piston rings (do a compression test?), stem seals, amongst things.

Maybe you do have a leak, but its leaking onto a hot part of the engine (exhaust) and burning before it hits the ground.

Does it smell oily when driving?

How exactly did you determine that you were 50% down on oil? Were you just going by the reading on dipstick?

Oddly enough, that was exactly what I was going to say. Could find that half down on the dipstick would only be say, half a litre out, or a litre - not say half the entire contents of the sump.

Some cars just naturally use oil.
I have the 2.0 VAG TFSI engine and having to put a litre in every other month is quite normal.
There is certainly nothing wrong with my engine and many people with the same engine report the same.

My engine should have 4.5 litres of oil, and I put in 2 litres until it hit between the min and max on the dipstick.

I do check my oil about once a month normally.
