so the story begins:

woke up this morning, started up computer, no internet, reset router + modem, no joy! Luckily I have another network so I connect to that, still got OcUK so still okay. However, my main network is with virgin media, and its the 20MB service which i prefer as the other one is a shocking 256kbp/s one. So, I phone up virgin on 151 saying there is no internet, get connected to a guy from India, he then tells me to switch off the router + modem, do that may as well play along with his script. All done there, then he asks what lights are showing so I go back downstairs and look, still not connecting. So, he asks me to........... get disconnected, not that bothered, stuff like that happens.

Phone back again, talk to another guy from India, explain how far i got with the other one, he says okay, asks for IP address so go into cmd and get the usual 192.168........., getting bored. Asks me to open Internet explorer (luckily I havent un-installed the rubbish yet) and everythings fine, so he talks to his supervisor. Comes back and says that the problem is with my computer and that there is a new driver for the wireless card and that I need to install it, I say did that when the new patch came out!! SO, he doesn't know what to do so transfers me to 'Chief technical adviser'..........phone gets cut off again, starting to get annoyed.

Phone back and on hold for 15 minutes, slowly getting annoyed. Finally talk to another one in India, he read what the other two have already done, says okay, agrees with the 2nd caller that my computer is at fault and that I should take it to a local repair shop! I kindly state that I know a fair bit about computers and that there is nothing wrong, he says fine then, get your laptop and plug it into the router...... still nothing, try the modem...... nothing, I ask for an engineer to come out, so he transfers me.

Waited 25 minutes on hold (starting to fume now!) and get a nice scottish lady, state what happens, get transfered back to India (really had enough at this stage)!

5th person from India checks everything again (I said what I had previously done, he looked up on the logs what the other callers had done but still decided that 'checking' my router and modem was the right thing to do, I ask for a number to phone the engineer centre, so i write it down and he just hangs up:confused:

By this stage I am on my second wireless telephone and angry for wasting so much time when they could have just admitted the fault was at their end. So, I take a breather for 15 minutes and phone the number, 'welcome to virgin media, the technical support line has switched numbers, please call 151'. So, the 5th guy gave me the wrong number to the wrong centre, the one in India where I was talking to 3 of them anyway. Then, I notice that my computer connected to the virgin network, so I test it out and its working atm, however, next time this happens I'm calling customer support and threatening to cancel the plan in order to get an engineer out, as this is not the first time and no doubt will it be the last that the connection just stops.

So, the story ends, and I've learnt nothing gets resolved like that and wasting a whole afternoon talking to someone on the other side of the world is quite amusing, as I'm wasting their time and I have nothing to do anyway :D

Thought this was thread worthy as it was quite significant

I stopped reading there! As long as you can access OcUK, all is well.

Just kidding, sounds like normal call centre fun to be honest, certainly not surprising.

That's why I'm with fast.co.uk their customer support is second to none, you get through to a proper technician who will help you investigate both connection and computer issues, never just fob you off with saying its your hardware at fault.

I'm having chew with my TV service. Had a new card posted out but it doesn't work. Am now only getting half the channels.

The reason for not calling them is because i've had chew with Indian call centres in the past, especially from Virgin Media and I can't be arsed with more hassle :(

chew? wtf?

Upgrade to 50mb, dedicate uk based help line. Who are very good and actually phone you back. As well as no throttling and faster connection.

Ive had the exact same problems that you've experienced with their tech support. It took me weeks of phoning to eventually convince virgin that the hardware at the top of our street was causing slowdowns.

Virgin are fine when their service works, but when trying to get something fixed its a total nightmare.

I find if you ring in the evening you usually get connected to a person from the UK rather than in India.

virgin media are becoming a joke i cant believe they got rid of the newsgroup for suport.

aparently its all on a proper forum now but i suspect its become a user helping users place to save money instead of tech people who know there stuff basicly asking for modem logs and checking the ubrs before booking an engineer.

At the end of the day you get what you pay for few ISPs are good at fixing pro lens, most have call centres out of the uk. I think ISPs are missing a trick here, just like banks have a premium account you pay for, ISPs could have the same just like virgin 50mb, uk call centre, no throttling or limits and what they call a VIP line, basically means your Internet has priority over other peoples.

I've had a lot of trouble with Virgin myself lately. My broadband takes forever to load a page and then I get 'time out' messages. At certain times of the day however, it is fine i.e. now! At first I thought someone was stealing my wireless connection but the signal is crap enough in my house nevermind outside! Even still I changed all the passwords etc and it is still the same.

I had enough the other day and it took 20 mins for me to convince the guy that I actually wanted to cancel my subscription and leave Virgin media because their service was crap. So I now need to find mum and dad a new brodband provider as I'm moving out in a few weeks anyway but I'll not be going back to Virgin!
