work hard in the uk, obey the law, pay your taxes ...

I agree with Settledown, sending them to South Africa on a fact finding mission will allow them to perfect their 'crime skillz', they'll see how to 'do violent stuff' properly, and come back more well rounded, dedicated criminals.

I'd give them the option, sine the money has clearly been wasted on the trip now already, then make them repay all the expenses from loss of benefits if they ever reoffend in the futher.

Far more that the disadvantaged kids in the OP.

In what way are they disadvantaged? The article states they are involved in or at risk of gang membership and criminal activities, it doesn't state any of them are disadvantaged. It does state they are Glaswegian, but from knowing several people from Glasgow, i wouldn't say they are disadvantaged.

Seems odd to send Scots to a world cup where Scotland are not playing.

While I hope it works in getting them out of gang violence, I am not convinced that sending them to the World Cup is the right way to go about it. It leaves a bad taste in the mouth for hard working taxpayers and I have the odd feeling that the D/Supt who was quoted in the article will be thinking something else.

It is implied, Kids with options are not generally attracted to Crime or Gang membership. Whether sending them to the World Cup is appropiate is arguable I agree, but I was holding the OP to count on the insinuation that hard working law-abiding people are somehow worse off than the kind of kids these schemes are set up to help, rather than the specific scheme highlighted.

So £10k of tax payer’s money is being spent, so what it must be a drop in the ocean compared with other schemes that may be wasting money. I wonder about how much money it costs to police gang violence in Glasgow.

Put it into perspective, it will cost you bugger all and if it achieves some positive results then it has been worth it.

Since when are football fans role models? I'm sure they'll be a million miles away from anything that can act like a gang and all things associated with it.....

Not fussed about the cost at all.

Do you think it will achieve anything?

I don't, I think it's more likely that the kids will go back to their routine when they get back

It's to teach them that there is potentially a lot more to life than the way they have currently lived, that life can be awesome and show them some of the stuff they could attain if they change their ways, and they don't have to live the rest of their lives like they have been living up to now ... some of these people would have never in their lives seen anything but how cr&p it can be and literally don't know any better. This is to show them better.

There are many cases where it has worked. Sent a yob who never had a chance on a 3 week safari, and when he gets back he's been inspired and next thing he's working hard to achieve what he now knows is possible to achieve. Send an identical yob to prison for 6 weeks, at more cost, and he meets lots of criminals, and anyway he's already been to prison 7 times IT'S CLEARLY NOT WORKING!

MUCH, MUCH cheaper than putting him in and out of prison for the rest of his life, and sometimes works!

Of course the daily mail amongst others gets an easy headline by dissing such schemes. And that somehow public flogging may inspire them to change their way of life instead. It is of course, rubbish. But easier for Johnny Thicko in the street to digest and as I mentioned gets an easy headline for a lazy journo who knows Johnny Thick will be outraged ..

Ok, so what is the theory behind this?

Viewing a football game and going to see some sights does not change who you are.

They will still be scum when they return.

Great post :)

You can't re-educate these kinda people... the only way they will ever change their ways is if something motivates them to do so... usually a fairly life changing event. Sending them on safari might work for say 1-2 in 100 but it will do nothing for most of them.

i understand the point about them hoping to take something positive away from this. my argument is that there are a lot of families out there who struggle to get by but pay their taxes and work hard, yet i doubt very much that any of their children get given a free trip to the world cup.
the 'yobs' are laughing and what about the 'yobs' who weren't selected? i'm sure there'll be fine about it .......
