Hope you enjoy them all, sorry if it's too many...but tough :p!

Thoroughly good day out, going to go again in a couple of weeks and try some other locations me thinks :)

Ok I am gonna say where I am on this.
Firstly I am not a fan of typical street photography unless it contains what I believe to be the main reason why anyone would want to go into it and that is (kodak moments or fantastic characters)

Street photography / 5 Second portraits... Well they are no way the same thing.
a 5 second portrait is everything about its title.
Street photography is capturing people in the city going or doing something (thats how I personally understand it)

There are perhaps 3 images in this collection that look like Daniel Santos's approch.
Photography is expressional so what I am about to say is my opinion I guess but you should have used a portrait orientation for the 5 second images (the clue is in the name of the orientation)
This way you are focusing on the person and combined with this you need to be close, as close as you are in the first picture but the portrait is wasted by the bokeh scene. All that space should be used to show me what shirt he's wearing or any other interesting items he may have with him.
Shooting chest upwards is key as a 5 second portrait is about capturing "a person" that is expressed by their expression, hair, items and clothing.

I like image 21. Its a nice moment caught and its in black n white which is powerful in these styles.

I like the portait of the musician but still I think that should be captured chest upwards. Nice and close.
Skye you have a nice portrait captured in landscape. 3rd image, working right on the limits of your depth of field luckily!

Lastly I feel that (and I am taking this from your blog post phate) each take a turn to take a picture.
Instead of looking at it like that ... Look for people who have an obvious story written all over their style.
Such as the toothless man of Danny Santos.. Ok that portraits not gonna get him very many hits on match.com but dam hes an absolute character and the photography screems brilliance.

Portraits = All about the people

As for the other images... I am really not keen on.

Appreciate your post. We both did intend on purely capturing portraits in which we asked people for their shots. But these were very unsuccessful that day, we were getting a no from generally everyone we asked. Which is why i went for some candid photography instead.

We didn't take it 'in turns' to ask, it was just whenever we genuinely saw someone interesting, and actually got a yes from them.

I agree that none of mine are in fact street portraits, apart from one - but that was down to being unsuccessful in actually getting people to agree with having their shot taken. Hopefully next time this will change. At least I got some street candids from the day, though..

O

Enjoy!

1. This is PURELY a test shot, and it nearly got us killed. I took it to check exposure without thinking who or what I was taking a picture of and these guys didn't look impressed afterwards!

I would have been most annoyed had they hurt my lens :p

Some really nice shots there imo, will have to come out with you two some time :)

I think its our country why people say no. We're too easily offended us brits.

Some of those photos are crackers. I cannot stand the Danny Santos photos, just think they are really weird and do absolutely nothing for me. Much prefer 7, 11, 16, 22 - really natural and well shot. :)

EDIT: it seems Dr Robert Neville from I am Legend was a fan of Danny Santos' work. :p

@Phate,
Re your 1st photo...was it taken on Saturday ?
i was there as well and Ive seen those lads as well :) I was taking pictures og chaps on skateboards and saw this lot :)
So most likely you saw me as well along with other togs from TP :)

Yes mate it was, and yep we spotted the big group and Syke saw on TP later that it was a TP meet :)

For some reason I really like the photo with the asian man in it, smoking a cigarette. For me somes up city life, in a rush, stressed out and checking to see who's called and running about with bags. :p
