ATI Catalyst™ 10.5a Hotfix

I've got all the latest windows updates installed, and just tried removing all previous driver and installing fresh but still the same result, after restarting my computer aero disappears. Other than this aero glitch my system runs perfectly, it just really annoys me I can't get aero to work and every update doesn't seem to help. :(

Has it always been like that with windows 7 & that ATI card ?.

Yes to the Profiles.

As for Fresh instals I would say that is the time most likely to catch people out. They instal windows then go to Update site, Do a few updates & things seem sorted then they go instal CCC & the drivers not realising that it takes a while for the update to kick the next Service pack down so they are trying to instal the CCC without the relevant service pack update.
Perhaps I am just cynical when it comes to PC's/Software but I Always look for User error first.

Having worked in PC repair, I also go to user error as it often is, but not always. I would expect on a forum like this that most people know their way around a machine a lot better than the average joe, so user error is less common.

Do you need ATI tray tools for the game profiles then, or is it built into catalyst?

Profiles are in CCC, Top right corner under options.

I appreciate what you say about our Member base but unfortunetly we are all just Human. I only know my way out of mistakes because I made them myself.

Cheers for the tip, I'll check it out.

I know what you're saying, PCs only do what you tell them, just the problems I was used to dealing with on a daily basis used to be very straightforward PBUK issues where the customer just plain didn't know how to use a machine. Saying that, the worst type are the people who think they know a lot but don't, they're dangerous! I just felt OcUK was above that, but it doesn't stop people making n00b errors, I make them every now and again too.

regarding driver installation well I always:

*go into safe mode / turn off antivirus software
*go to control panel
* add/remove programs
* uninstall ati application profiles
* uninstall ati catalyst install manager
* from here uninstall all ati software and related
* reset
* use drive sweeper and check ati boxes, then analyse/check and clean
* reset
* use registry cleaning stuff
* reset
* install new ati drivers
* turn on antivirus software
* etc

have never had issues

I used to recommend Driver sweeper myself a while back but ATi drivers have come on quite a bit since then & Driver cleaner has become to aggressive which is why I don't recommend it any more.
The 10.5a's are the only recent ATi drivers I haven't just installed over the top of the old but these were released to fix a Specific bug so I wanted rid of the olds anyway. Having read the release notes it confirmed my thinking.

And totally unnecessary.

Indeed, these days they cause more problems than they solve. I think both sides have learnt from the previous need for driver cleaners, by making the uninstallers more accurate and thorough.

The only time I'd suggest one is when moving from green to red or red to green without a fresh OS install and even then I've done it without and it has worked fine.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with all problems being user error, just because certain people don't get any issues and others do doesn't mean it is down to them alone. Sure sometimes it is, but more often than not my issues have been caused by drivers or hardware.

I've always found nVidia drivers to be better, but I'm in no way brand loyal. They always seem to have less specific game issues and are more stable, they are also laid out better. But I'm using a ATi card atm and will continue to do so for some time.

Well all I do is either install over the top or uninstall via add/remove, reboot and install new drivers.

I've NEVER had any issues whatsoever. If people are having problems, there must be a conflict within their rig, with either software or hardware.....

All the drivers I've ever had from ATI and nVidia have ALWAYS just worked.

Same here for years, until now. I will remind you of that post once it happens to you at some stage (;)).

And the opposite is true.

I had no problems with ATI installs until just one set on vista that was not compatible with 8GB of ram and multi GPU at the time when 8GB was rare.

The install would only work for the first GPU & ignore the other 3 as i was running Quad Fire at the time.

Others with 8GB & CF where having the exact same problem so after numerous attempts i went the driver Sweeper route & then the ATI installer could not find any cards at all after that & only a system restore could fix it.

ATI were aware of the issue but advised the removal of 4GB of ram for the time being which worked.

More explanation is needed in your case as you may of messed up 4 days ago requiring you to take more drastic measures.

I installed 10.5 over 10.2 as recommended for the 5830, and I got crashes all the time. Took two goes at uninstalling, running driversweeper then cleaning the registry, then CCleaner, then reinstall to stop the freezes.

Still hasn't sorted it completely, they're just less often...

I'm considoring just wiping the OS and installing 10.5a fresh, or probably just stick with 10.2 as it works fine.

I would not of done an over the top from such a jump in versions.
I would have used the ATi uninstall first.

Just a note , installed 10.5a over 10.5 and bfbc2 seemed no different , then read about uninstalling and then using 10.5a and now bfbc loads in 4 secs. !!
