Hi everyone, someone recently posted pictures of their new pet mantis and it has made me jealous. Well a combination between that and already wanting one :), but it gave me the idea of asking the folks at ocuk what a suitable animal for me is. So if anyone can make any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

I was thinking along the lines of lizard/gecko but wasn't sure from there. I don't want anything massive as I don't have the room for it in my bedroom, and my mother won't surrender anywhere else in the house to me as she isn't keen on those types of animals. I don't want anything too expensive, initially and long term.

Also I want something that is easy to keep and look after. I quite like the look of bearded lizards or leopard gecko but am open to anything although around that size would be good.

I also need to factor in that I will be going to university in a year so I'm not sure how that will affect choices.

Thanks to any suggestions and I will try to respond promptly.

i probably wouldnt bother tbh pal, unis dont like any pets at halls never mind exotic ones! just enjoy uni > get a good job > get your own place > buy whatever pets the hell you want! :)

I'm at uni with my mantis. Small enough to hide if you're in halls, easy to look after and short life span if you're scared of commiting to something long term. Been wanting some sort of pet for ages now and these little guys seemed win win.

Jack.

So glad my mantis thread has got so many people chosing some more exotic pets :)

As for things that are small and easy to look after...Tarantulas / Scorpions / Centipedes can be kept in plastic faunariums, some dont need additional heat as long as your room is not a silly extreme, but these are more an accquired taste shall we say, as all of them have venom of some sort and are not everyones cup of tea.

Some frogs can be kept in smallish tanks as well, as can some crabs...maybe not as small as the above but still fairly easy to get on a desk somewhere

Assasin bugs are pretty awesome and easy to look after as well, not looked as much into these and the others though.

Geckos need a fairly big viv, 2ft by 2ft for the crestie i have just got...and beardies need a bigger tank still, possibly 3 or 4 foot long.

There are loads of different mantis / stick insects that are silly easy to look after and you are not going to find anything that takes up less room really :)

Hope this has helped, have a look at http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/forums/ through all the different sections...that website is just full of information and helpful people :)
