Me vs the Romain lorry on the M25

Worst thing thats nearly happened to me was when I was following an artic and one of its tyres completely shredded and rolled away onto the hard shoulder while the sidewalls were left curled on the road.

Luckily it was at 5 mph in heavy traffic in road works so arctic could pull straight onto hard shoulder (smushed a few cones) and cars could avoid the large bits of rubber.

I hate being next to lorrys at roundabouts and in road works when the lanes get narrow and your choice is between a couple tens of tonnes of moving metal or a concrete barrier and some tard behind you wanting to go 1 mph faster than you...

Oh yeah, heading a long the A69 from carlisle to newcastle, 3 arctics, then a car, then me, then another arctic. Got to a an old long stone bridge which was down to 1 lane for repairs (presume from the floods) was night and I didnt see the red light of the roadworks untill the 3 arctics were past. Car in front of me didnt stop, I did.... and the arctic behind me also didnt, must have missed me by an inch doing 50 mph while I was standstill.

I think it was stupid the arctics and car in front of me didnt stop, but then, it was also maybe stupid of me to stop if theyre going through anyway.

well the car goes in tomorrow to have the damage sorted out.

What has got my goat already was the following:

1. called insurance company to start claim. all went fine.
2. got call from repair company telling me that they would provide a hire car and when did I want it? guy on the phone then says "do you have the drivers green card number?". When I said I didn't know what that was he told me that there would be no hire car unless I had the drivers green card number. I told him I didn't know what it was or how to get it so it was left up to me to track this number down and then call them back up with it before they would provide me with a car.
3. same repair company called up half an hour later explaining that the car will be collected between 12 - 6pm on tuesday. I explained to the women on the phone about the green card and she said she didn't know anything about that and that she would arrange a like for like hire replacement to be made available on tuesday. she also said that the hire company would call me in a few hours to go through the details.
4. had no call from anyone on friday or saturday, and obvioulsy nothing on sunday so called my insurer this morning (bank holiday monday) and explained all that he happend above. the women on the phone told me that the repair company wouldn't provide a car as standard, and that the insurer would as it's an option on my policy and that she would make arrangements for a car to be made available tomorrow. She aplogised for the confusion.

not a great start, i am not filled with confidence around the repair company now. Would it be an idea to take some photo's of my car before they come and pick it up, just in case it's damaged while they have it?

I'd take as many photo's as you can mate, just in case, not to mention for the before & after thread.... ;)

Iirc, that stretch is single carriageway? - The Artics should have been doing no more than 40 if so, alas, many don't.

You see a Red traffic light, you Stop.. No question.

Pretty sure they were going flat out, otherwise the golf in front of me would have overtaken them.

I couldn't believe when I realised the people in front had went through a yellow/red, or that the arctic behind didn't even seem to slow. An inch from becoming a crushed tin can left me shaken a bit.

Only been driving 2 years but one thing I quickly learned was stay the hell out of the way of anything bigger than you, and if you can't see the driver he can't see you.

quick update, called the garage today and have been told all the work has been completed. All that remains to go is put the car on a jig to make sure everything is ok and then I can have it back on Wednesday.

I can't wait, since tuesday I've been driving around in a renault modus with all it's 1.2 power!! 100 mile commutes to work and today a detour through london to avoid the M25 in something that needs a push to get it up hill! lol
