Ok, this isn't a for sale thread outside of the Member's Market, but I do admit it's a bit of a "Spec me how to sell one thing so I can buy another..." type thread.

Upshot of it is:

I currently have an iPhone 3GS that is on a 2 year contract that won't run out until December 2011 (!!!).

I really fancy a Google Nexus One.

So, in a similar position, what would you do? Do I have any options bar taking out a second contract, which I would really like to avoid, but am not 'totally' against?

Thanks for any advice, even if it's just stop being silly :).

Sell the iPhone to the vast swathes of people that would buy a turnip if it had an apple logo on it, and then use the money to buy a HTC Desire, which is like a Nexus One only cheaper and without a tacky rollerball.

Thanks Fox. I did wonder about that option. What are the Desire's going for just now unlocked and off contract?

One thing to remember regarding Nexus is that it will get all the new android updates Months earlier compared to anything from HTC. Already got 2.2 Froyo

If you realy like HTC sense then just put it on the nexus. As for roller ball vs optical pad who the hell uses either of them?

Nexus also has a good developer community with more of the experts supporting it

The "from the source" nature of the Nexus One was pretty much the main thing that appealed to me, but then I don't truly know how important that actually would be, or just how much of a 'power user' I would want to be anyway.

Decisions, decisions.

Sell the iPhone on ebay and try pick up a Desire sim free for <£350. The earlier updates on the N1 aren't worth the premium price imo. The contract deals are quite cheap too, about £25 for 18 months. Could always use the money from the iPhone to essentially pay off the Desire contract?

I wouldn't call the trackball 'tacky'. It's smaller than the trackball on earlier android phones and acts as a notification light, can be used to wake up the screen or take a picture (via certain roms). To be honest I thought I'd prefer the optical pad on the Desire over the trackball but having had the Nexus One for 3 months I've learnt that the trackball is much more useful.

Fox has said what I was going to say so I won't repeat it :p

I think the Desire's optical pad is far less tacky than the trackball, it just feels so old fashioned :p

Oh, and Memphis, you should be able to get one for around £350 brand new.

This. People seriously underestimate the trackball for a notification light. Mine is a different colour for each type of notification, It's nice knowing what to expect before touching the phone.

In my opinion that alone makes it better than the Desire.

The Desire is still a brilliant phone, I'd whole-heartedly recommend it.

Basically its as simple as what ever is cheapest get it. My guess is the desire is probably cheaper and the nexus probably isnt worth the extra £10 a month. so id get the desire.

My self have the Nexus for almost 6 months. No waiting around for crappy UK networks no waiting for a desire. Phone was around £350 plus a VAT charge of £60 a month later. I got a contract of £25 a month for the HD2 and sold that on ebay for £380 brand new so it paid for my nexus.

Isn't there an app for changing the colours on the front led light? Such as BerryBuzz for the Blackberry.

Yes there is. I had it for my Curve.

I only brought this up in relation to the discussion about the trackpad on the Desire compared to the 'tacky' trackball on the Nexus.

I wouldn't listen to people saying the Desire is better than the Nexus one or vice versa. Most are just justifying their purchase! In reality (Owning an N1 and my g/f owning a Desire) there are pros and cons for both and its entirely down to personal preference, go play with both and buy the one you like best

Either way you will be getting something so much better than your iPhone!

Most of us did play with both and choose the best, hence the purchase

What I'm saying is its useful to know what the differences are, but one isn't better than the other, its personal preference. So to say the Nexus is better because of xyz or vice versa is, in my opinion, unhelpful

What a ridiculous thing to say. Clearly one IS better than the other - the crucial bit is that which one is better for you depends on your wants and needs.

.....

Anyway. Memphis I'm going to be getting a Desire then selling it to purchase the Nexus One. It appeals to me more because of the light up trackball, dock and the fact it will be getting updates direct from google and no waiting around for the guys at XDA to get the builds working. I'm not to sure if the 2.2 update for the Desire is 100% working yet. Last I read was bluetooth and other things wasn't working. Probably fixed by now but the point still stands.
