Desier/One vs iPhone

And I cannot see any way they can tell whether you are tethering, either, though obviously P2P is probably detectable.

I have no idea, it's just what they've told me.

I've had friends on O2 regularly use 5-7Gb per month without any issues (lots of last.fm, spotify and streaming media from home machines).

It is possible to do, although it is a chore to do.

Well next Monday should see the release of further info on new iPhone, so I think I'll wait for that before making the jump I think.:)

Bah, I did write a big post, but it was just me taking crap.

Long story short: I love the way I can make Android look, feel & work exactly how I like it, all you have to do is look at the phone desktops thread to see all the ways people make the phone their own.

It's a nice feeling, to have that interface just the way you like it rather than have it dictated to you and every other user.

How - the phone itself is requesting the same data, regardless of how its displayed locally?

The same packets are sent and received using, say, IRC regardless of whether its using Android IRC or mIRC on a Laptop?

They must be able to see what kind of files are going through the network, or where it is coming from? ie. Torrents etc

My iPhone reports after almost a years usage 1.3Gb of Cellular Network Data received, is this likely to be right?

If so then a 1Gb usage limit on Voda won't bother me.

The more you guys talk about the Desire the more desire I have to get one :p

That could be about right with moderate browsing and usage yes.

Get yourself one, you'll think your iPhone is a kids learner phone compared ;)

When using my (admittedly winmo) phone attached to my laptop it is exactly the same web as on my phone, ie compressed images etc.

I'm sure however it would be just as easy as it is for web hosts to see what browser you are using, screen resolution, OS etc on normal web pages.

Hmm, I may test that when i'm bored actually, see if google analytics shows up my laptop attached to my phone as a laptop of HD...

These threads are annoying! My contract is up and I was thinking of saving money for the foreseeable future by getting a simplicity deal but I'm oh so tempted by either the Desire or the X10 (or even HD2)! But that means spending more and being stuck in an 18 month contract, especially with new phones and OSs on the horizon... But still ~£25 a month and a free phone is a lot better than £20 a month and no new phone... :(

There will always be new phones on the horizon, you need to take the plunge at some point. The Desire and N1 are both quite well futureproofed with big big developer communities, I wouldn't worry too much about it ;)

I meant specifically WP7 which isn't just a piddly Android 2.1-2.2 style "new".:p

I Think the problem is we don't have the EVO over here. :( The Desire is butt ugly, the X10 software isn't brilliant and the HD2 is getting on a bit now. I want a new phone, just none of them really match up with the EVO, the HD2 with Android. :( :p

EDIT: Oh, and they all have capacitive screens as well. :(

i like my desire, im not 100% in love with it yet but i would say over my 3 previous iphones its certainly a nice phone.

so my reasoning, iphone at the moment has the folliwng going for it a smoother os experience and apps . but it is seriously restrictive.

i love how open andriod is, the desire itself is superfast and widgets are something special as is the live wallpapers (which would probably come to iphone in about 2015),sat nav, the andriod store is getting there, but then the apple store was crap once (and some would say still is) so im more then happy to wait until more people get on board (google expects a massive surge of apps this year)

the desire is a nice bit of tech and it may take some getting used to but it is worth it.
andriod 2.2 is really going to up the game a lot with wifi hotspot, sd card install apps/games (meaning bigger and better games/apps), refreshed marketplace (to make it more like apples experience), itunes streaming, music downloads and a big speed increase;

i sync all my music by itunes and an app called itunessync, so you dont even have to lose itunes either.

The HD2 is a bit of a brick. It's more netbook than phone :) Theres a limit on how big a screen should be, it weighs your jeans down.

It's only a few grams heavier than my HD. I'd jump on it tbh, I like WinMo on my HD so on the HD2 it would be even better, however I'd like to try out android and see what all the fuss is about. If WinPho7 was definately coming to the HD2 then I would almost certainly go out and get that..

Just noticed as well that the Desire has a smaller screen than my HD, can't be doing with that!:(

Buying music on the move is potentially one area which may let you down with the Desire. Although, saying that, there is an Amazon MP3 app which I haven't used yet so that may cover it.

I imagine it's tricks like the phone requesting compressed images, broadcasting as a moble device to websites (for mobile views) etc.

Yeah, I thought that, but I thought that since I can tell my N1 to bring up normal or mobile sites, and show up as android, iphone or desktop, then my network provider can't be 100% sure. I don't know why network providers care about tethering anyway, as long as you stay within your fair usage cap.
