Finally bullied my insurance into letting me have a mk1 turbo. So unfortunatley Mary the mk2 will now be up for sale. However, her replacement, Madonna is a cracking lady!

S-special (not sure if LSD?), Nardi wheel etc, Greddy turbo set up, some sorta power card, massive Oil cooler in the front (do g-reddy make one, not sure what manufacturer it is), nice ARBs, Ohlins shocks all round, no rust apart from a little bit of surface where it's been jacked up before, ful downpipe/de-cat/turbo backbox (I think?).

12 Months MOT n all, bargain price of £1600!

Few issues, needs front pads and the turbo has a bit of shaft play so will look at that in the future. Along with some proper management, not sure how to I/C it atm though as oil cooler is in the way. Also needs relief cuts doing in the manifold so need to find a spec for it so I can get it done asap. Anyway, heres some pics:

Bullied might be the wrong word, took a lot of working out though, for some reason they'd insure an import with a turbo conversion but wouldn't if it was a UK? Normally it's the other way round, also was more expensive for a mk1 with a lower value than a mk2?

Still, can't complain, flux only wanted another £90 on top of my original policy on a mk2 to change to the turbo :D

Yeah Adrian Flux. Was £480ish TPFT, 21, 3 years driving 1 year NCB for just the Mk2 1.6 N/a. Then an extr £95 to change to the mk1 turbo, limited to 6k miles but ALL mods declared.

Also they did a temporary insurance for £34 so I could have both insured for a week which has turned out to be a complete life saver!

Bargain, really is. Ropey early motors are 1200-1400 in summer. Any rot on the sills?

How on earth did you find a turbo'd MX5 for just £1600?

Tis a 1.6 for a start which command less of a premium and with known shaft play in the turbo which could be a decent bill I can see why the seller might have let it go for that price.

I could do with some FI on mine :(

Looks like a super cheap Turbo kit to me, doubt its making much power?

I did think that Nutz used Gredy turbos, so I assume they're not that bad. IIRC the 1.6 was the same block used in the 323 turbo, which was used as they're group A rally special back in the 80s (I remember nearly totalling one, but that's a different story). So to my knowledge, the 1.6 has plenty of theorectical scope for tuning.
Having said all of that, the BBR wasn't that ballsy.

Alex> what's it meant to be producing?

Looking at the numbers around 140bhp for a stock(ish) kit, which is the same as the 1.8 Mk2 (non VVTI).

Depends which 323 turbo, they used the 1.8 as well iirc.

The Greddy kit is just about the most basic and lowest power turbo kit you can buy for a 5.

No rot, tiny bit of surface on the jacking points, going to look into getting it "dinitolled" or whatever that stuff is called, dont like using Waxoyl and hammerite is bad for cars.

Is cheap because it was bought by someone who "wanted a fast car" and wasn't into the scene so didn't know about the spec. Then wrote a really naff advert, just that I was botehred enough to actually go look at it and find out about it.

Disagree on hte 1.8s getting a premium, overall pricewise they roughly the same, apart from early short crank nose 1.6s due to the known wood rough key issues. The bloke wouldn't of had a clue about the shaft play, done some reasearch and most TD04H seem to have a degree of shaft play. Either way, to rebuild myself it's an £80 kit, or a £200+ bill to pay to have someone else to do it in the future. Isn't smoking etc at the moment.

Greddy turbo kit is viewed as "budget" I guess, but BBR is rare, Flyin Miata costly, HKS also rare. Greddy kit is regarded as having a lot of potential and people have had 240BHP+ builds from using the base kit.

Not sure on how much this is making, but would say 140-150. Definitley a lot faster than my 1.6mk2 was. It's a bit rough below 4k but that's due to the retardation required when not running full management.

Overall it does need a little bit of a tweek here and there, and am already looking for a wideband to make sure its ratios are ok, also going to try and get it onto a dyno soon to check overall health.

Cheers

Alex

What was wrong with the pink one?

I really hate the green colour that they come in, there seem to be an awful lot of them about
