How would you deal with this?

O2 want to bill me £177 for using 73mb of data in Amsterdam over 2 days.

I have an HTC Desire on an iPhone tariff.
I always leaving data turned on, and regularly go abroad.
I will read email and facebook updates a few times a day.
I have been in Dublin before for a week and the data bill was only £80!
I didn't use 73mb

Lodged a complaint with o2 and the best I got was - "its your own fault - tough" basically

Ideas?! :(

Ask for an itemised breakdown of the data usage and compare against your phone's logs.

Well i dont see the issue....you went abroad and used data and therefore have been charged in accordance to what O2's roaming charges are.

You dont have a leg to stand on...all you can do is appeal to their good nature but dont hold your breath on that one.

And you do realise that some countries are cheaper to roam in than others??...not sure on O2's roaming charges or what they state.

Next time your abroad...try and buy a PAYG sim from there and use that for data...or use WIFI...

As Spawn said, a lot of operators sting you for data roaming.

I don't think there will be a great deal you can do about it :( Just make sure it's turned off when you go next!

You can try and argue it with them though if you don't see how it's possible you used 73MB.

Yes I went abroad and used data - not that much of it though. Oh well.

O2 is £3/mb flat in the EU.

And they claim they don't keep an itemised copy of data usage and wont even compare it to usage over here :(

Just spoke to someone else and they have credited my account with £209 (the roaming + vat) without a whistle of an argument :D

well chuffed :D

Ah dammit. Done the same but in Croatia, not in EU. Charged £8/Mb for 38Mb data, forgot about the whole data roaming thing. That's over ten times more than my normal bill.

What are the chances they'll be lenient? Should I have had any warnings about usage/bill charges?

Unfortunately not. I had data roaming on in France the month before as it's never been that bad and I've wanted to use it. Didn't receive any warnings from Orange while in Croatia - should I have?

The charges are easy to find on the Orange site, I should have been aware I know. I just didn't think I'd be coming home to a £350 bill.

I had similar situation few weeks back when came back from holidays in Greece and one day visit to Albania....Im with Tmobile
while in Greece, I bought 3 or 4 internet boosters as I was unable to use data on mobile otherwise( when you try to connect you get directed to a web page where you can buy boosters)
Went to Albania for a day, and had mine roaming data still switched on.
I received a txt that 1MB is £7.50!! but I was receiving those txt's every-time my mobile was changing network in Greece....so wasnt too concerned about it as I was convinced boosters will do its job...

to my surprise, when I checked mobile usage on web, I saw that my bill will be £132!!!!
and around 70-80 was for 8MB that was used in Albania!!!

as a gesture of good will they have taken off %25 of this internet charge still leaving me with £116 bill....

need to check this 50 euro limit....

and as OP would appreciate any help as well :)

EDIT :
just read all replies and as someone mentioned it only appplies to EU...
still why tmobile allowed me to use so much data...
