at the moment i have a radeon 3870,is it worth upgrading to a radeon 5550,will there be much improvement over 3870.the 3870 has 512ddr4 memory while the 5550 has 1gb of ddr2 memory.any advice welcome.

5550 is a shameful card, I would be willing to guess it would be worse performance if anything.

Get the 5750 at least, yet a 5770 is an exceptional card. If your upgrading on a budget the 5770 is by far the best option.

3870 is still a competent card.

You could sell it and get a new 4850 or even better a 4870 second hand for very little extra. Either that or wait for a 5770 as already suggested.

i would say that a good jump is going to be as said 4850 upwards.

I went from a 3850 512mb to a Hd4770 and the jump then was HUGE! the 4xxx series do a much better job with AA and performance in general than the 3xxx series.

Thing to always remember with memory is you can have as much as you like (e.g. onboard shared cards can have like 1.5gb ram) but at the end of the day, if the card in question has a small bandwidth bus and a slow GPU processor trying to use it , its set up to fail from the start as it will not be able to make any use of the memory its hording.

to put this into terms between your current and the 5500 cards

3870 bandwidth - 72GB/second
5500 bandwidth - 28.8GB/second

hope that helps

Ben
