Gulf Oil Spill ( LIVE FEED )

Amazing footage  Thanks simulatorman for the updates/pics in this thread. Hope they get it capped.

I don't entirely get what is happening.

Maybe the hydraulic shear they have isn't powerful enough. I started watching when it released a section of pipe. Now the RVs are cutting the 4 smaller pipes surrounding the main riser.

I wonder if the shear will be back to finish the job.

the riser main is 20inch wide 1" thick steel. maybe they need to remove the 4 x 6" ancilliary mains to allow the genesis xp super shears to cut it.

Aha I thought correct. The shear was not powerful enough to sever the complete riser. They sent in the RVs to cut out sections of the 4 smaller pipes.

Here it is leaving after partially crushing the riser.

Closer still. Moving to left of crimp.

Below we can see the area crimped by the shear and the rv moving to cut pipe right of it.

Indeedy, I laughed pretty hard when the ROV snapped the pipe off and just let go of it, reminded me of a little kid or the guy in the wheelchair in Little Britain... "Don't want that!"

there is a risk all this oil can filter through to the gulf stream, and if that happens, it will be more than an American disaster.

can someone update me why are these pipes being chomped?

big sheer has to cut the larger pipe those smaller ones are attached to. the cutters are clearing the way

the big pipe is attached to the well head which needs to be sliced of with a diamond cutter, it needs to be accurate and clean for a cap to be placed on it, whichis why the mess you see with many pipes has to be cleared and cut away.

the big pipe is called the riser which takes oil from the well head to the oil rig on the surface.
