I live in an area without fibre optics.

My 'broadband' speed is limited to a maximum of 2Mbit. This gives me download speeds of ~230kbps at non-peak times and about ~40kbps at peak times.

AND IT SUCKS

Meanwhile, my friend is surfing at 6.5mbps on his Virgin 50Mbit line

Anyone else suffering?!

I had 3 years of glorious 20mb whilst at Uni, back home to 512k, which then got upgraded to 2mb recently.

2mb isn't amazing but it's fantastic compared to 512k.. I like yourself don't have cable on my street (it stops about 50m down the road).

Luckily, I get 150Mb here at uni (for the next 3 weeks anyway).

The chances are if you're in an area that can only get 2Mbit via DSL that they are not going to bother cabling it anytime soon.

If you want it that bad, do something about. Obe village clubbed together and did sponsored stuff to raise the ~£25k need to pay virgin to install cable.

Haha, that's crazy! People are barely willing to give money to charity (In general), so I can't see a fund-raising event for faster broadband working out that well :/

I did submit my address to Virgin. They then looked at the area and told me whether they'd be doing any cable services in the near future and whether it would be possible at all... They said no

Actually, what you want is to threaten BT with witholding payment - it seems to work.

That, and a good contention ratio and short exchange distance.

If that's not a typo that's actually very reasonable. BT are quoting ~£150,000 for the same thing, and cable is superior.
