Hi everyone, first time OC'er and I need to replace my OEM Denver 11 with a decent mobo to OC my Intel 2 Quad Core Q8200 with a single XFX 4850. No plans to xfire in the future. Just the one card in there. I don't expect to get too much out of that processor so it doesn't need to be an expensive board, just something to tie me over until I the time comes to properly upgrade my PC.

Many thanks for suggestions.

EDIT:

Forgot to mention I'm using 4GB of DDR2 RAM, so board will need to be compatible with that as I don't have money to upgrade RAM also.

P43 boards tend to top out at 415-425mhz on the fsb and you will need more than that to get a decent clock out of a E8200. The foxconn ELA is a terrible board for clocking and the P5Q SE2 has the 24pin socket in the worst place they could put it.

If it was me i would spend a little extra and get the Gigabyte EP45-UD3LR.

This might be completely stupid considering it's only half the price of any of the ones you guys suggested but worth try I guess:

Also, exactly what should I be looking for in a OC motherboard? What determines how well it can OC? Sorry. Completely new at this. I've heard it's possible to get the Q8200 to 3.36GHz. I don't need it to do that much. Close to 3.0GHz would be enough and in fact ideal for power consumption/performance tradeoff.

The mobo u linked to has a max fsb of 1333/333 which your cpu runs at, at stocks speeds, so u realistically that mobo will be hard pushed to clock a lot further.

So as pasty said earlier, because of the low multi on your cpu you will need a mobo that supports 1600/400 fsb, so that you can go higher.

The Asus P5Q SE2 is a very good overclocking board, for the money, and will hit 500fsb no problems, ofcourse with fast enough memory, i do have to agree that the power connecter is'nt in the best positions.

The gigabyte pasty linked to is very good, another top mobo.

Now the one u linked to will probably go to 400fsb, but probably won't go much higher if at all, and that would only be 2.8ghz, and if your happy with that then by all means get the cheaper one, but don't expect it to go that high.

not with a quad though i'd imagine. Also the 4 phase power can also be somewhat limiting, but 3ghz should still be easy on this. The gigabyte gets another vote from me though out of the ones ocuk are selling.

Wow. Thanks for all the replies everyone. I went ahead and spent the extra little bit to grab the Gigabyte P45 as suggested by Pasty after reading around on other forums it seems highly recommended. Even found a long thread about this board and OCing my particular CPU so it's a win IMO.
