The *Official* Eve Online Thread

Eve online any good for a noob? What's mining like? I was always interested in that haha.

Speaking as someone who's just started I'd say it's rather pleasant for a new player. The introductory tutorials explain everything pretty well and you get plenty of free Frigates and a couple of Destroyers to see you on your way if you complete them all.

The game itself is great, there's plenty to do and many careers you can choose. I do quite like the skill system as well, even if it's a little disheartening to see how many days (or weeks) some skills may end up taking to learn.

Now a couple of questions for the experienced guys:

I've been doing a lot of salvaging, what's the best thing to do with what I've salvaged? Sell it directly or try to make rigs? I look at the prices of rig blueprints and the materials that go into them, as well as the prices those rigs sell for and it really doesn't seem worth it.

Regarding the trial account and turning it into a proper account, can I simply buy a 60 day gametime card and make the account a full account that way? This would bypass the £20 first month/activation fee and seems a far better option since a GTC can be had for not a lot more than £20. I wouldn't want to buy a GTC and not be able to do this however.

As for that level 5 mission I have, it's got another five days left on it and I'm around most evenings. Which of you would be best placed to complete it safely and not demand all the loot? ;)

I'm in Eystur most of the time.

I was hoping to find someone willing to do the mission for the fun of it and the joy of helping a new player get off to a decent start, although there is millions in bounty and salvage plus other potential loot in that mission I believe.

Can anyone help me with a couple of questions.

1) Buying the game:

- Steam has an option to pay £14.99, which gives you 30 days on a new account. Can you upgrade a trial account from the Steam purchase? Or must the steam purchase be used for an entirely new account. Alsom would I have to pay the 5 euro activation fee AFTER giving Steam £14.99? It would be nice to start a trial account and then just pay £14.99 on steam to make it a full account, thus getting an extra 14 days out of the trial. £14.99 on steam is cheaper than €14.95+€5.00 in euro; not by much but, yeah.

2) Starting/Playing the game:

- The last time I played was 2006. How have they changed the starting experience since then? I rememer picking certain Categories when making your character and starting with a few different skills already trained depending on what you want to do. Have they improved on this? Or do you start with substantially lower skill points than everyone else. I would like to be able to do stuff in the game without having to wait weeks and weeks for skills to train. It was annoying knowing I HAD to wait a specific time, and a long amount of time at that, before I could have even access to something. I do understand this is a skill based game, but would hope you know start with a good selection of skills so as to not make you bored at the start. What I also hated was "having" to train the learning skills.... I guess those are still in?

Thank you!

I started the trial through steam and bought it through steam upgrading my trial account in the process so thats possible. Unfortunatly if you buy game time through CCP you will have to pay the 5 euro fee the first time.

New accounts now get a training time bonus on the first 1.6million SP so you can get upto speed on basic stuff quite quickly DO make the most of this to train up your learning skills first as this makes the game a whole world less painful compared to having to try and opptimise those skills later (or suffer hugely long learning times on new skills).

I think my most difficult decision will be picking whether to specialise Amarr Ships or Gallante at the start. I really like the look of Gallante Battleships, such as the Megathron, but hate Amarr's Art Deco designs. However an Amarr Interceptor, like the Malediction, is the best looking ship in the game imo.

Thats the problem I had/have, the gal ships I find in the main the most visually appealing but my playing style is more suited to minmatar - but as a generalisation they have the ugliest ships ever.

Haha I'm a little bit of Amarr, a little bit of Galante. I think I should probably go Gallante, because I will likely fly their Battleships more but, then again, I might go the mining route.

I just tried to get the 14 day trial from Steam, but it keeps redirecting me to Tyrannis - I guess their Trial no longer exists.

If I get the trial from EvE directly, can I upgrade using Steam is my main concern. I would rather avoid the "activation fee" CCP have.

I think it is fair to say anyone helping would like some share of it! :p
Which faction was it against?

Alright, so I started the trial after many years of avoiding this game due to it being potentially far too addictive for me.

Anyway, I just got given that level 5 mission on my four day old character. The one with the uber amount of battleships and a +5 Implant worth 100mil as the reward.

Anyone capable of doing that mission? I've seen players helping out newbs with this bugged mission on the forum and enjoying it, so I figured I'd ask here to see if anyone is capable of doing it ;)

Here's a link to a post which has a lot more details about what's in the mission itself: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1324987

I went in there three times with my little Destroyer, I managed to kill one Frigate before escaping by the skin of my teeth. I certainly didn't expect to see so many battleships attacking me this early into the game!

Level 5 mission? After playing for 4 days? Am I missing something here?

(can't view the link from work btw :()

Dude sharing the loot is mandatory, people are going to be risking expensive ships and using ammo that costs ISK to run a level 5, you'd still get a decent amount of money but not many people would do that for free.

Avoid the activation fee by bying plex and applying it, easy peasy, and you still get to keep all the days left on the trial, so just do it...

Just sell the salvage, its only worth building rigs if you have BPOs with high PE and ME to run copies from so you can build with less salvage, and you also need Production Efficiancy 5.

Screw using steam, get the game directly off of the eveonline.com website.

The best way to start playing the game is to try and get the learning skills to 4, get +3 implants in your head off the bat (needs cybernetics 1), then speed train for a T1 fitted cruiser in whatever race you play as, along with their tank and weapons. From that point onwards you can start running level 1 missions while continuing to train in your desired profession and begin getting an income.
If you want to fly PVE start moving towards a battlecruiser with a good Tech II fit to start, then you should be able to run level 4's at a squeeze and make decent money.
If you want to fly PVP start moving towards a T2 fit interceptor and get in a corporation that flies PVP and has good fleets. These corporations are always looking for ceptor pilots for tackle and then you can start moving towards bigger and better ships.
If you want to mine start moving towards the retriever ASAP, its a HUGE jump from the mining frigates and cruisers, then aim for a hulk after.

Always remember, when you look back in a years time, its an epic feeling to see how much you've accomplished and how far you've progressed... But never fear, there is always something new to train...

.... And learn to love losing your ships. You will lose your best ship. It will happen, just a matter of time...... Remember the golden rule, only fly ships you can easily afford to replace..... Update your clone and get that ship insured. It all makes the pain a lot lesser.

It's a bug in the game.

People are happily missioning away at level 1 or 2 and then part 2 of one of the storyline missions they're offered (I can't remember the name of it) is a level 5 one with a +5 implant as a reward.

I went to help some random in the TXSI channel when he said he was having trouble with a level 2 storyline mission. I jumped in with my Domi equipped with the the wrong hardeners and drones expecting a couple of frigs and a few cruisers only to be jumped on by 5 battleships, a few battlecruisers and some webbing frigs for good measure.

I pooped my pants. :D

I used to be in microfunks, think they were a training corp that lead to becoming part of ATLAS in some way. Something interesting happen?

Leys say. a slight smeg up on their part led to an interesting time. they have now left our alliance alone :) Just one to go now :)

I wasn't saying no sharing, just "not demanding all the loot" as I wrote ;)

Sharing is a perfectly reasonable thing to expect of course, especially since anyone helping will be risking their hardware indeed.

Your advice makes sense, it's along the lines of what I have been doing but more specific. I've got +1 implants all round, but I'll get the +3's as they are certainly worth it.

I had my heart set on a Hurricane as it looks extremely cool and I have been enjoying mission running and salvaging the wrecks so far. PvP is of course the ultimate goal though as I'm an absolute competitive gamer.

To be honest I'd quite like to try lots of different careers in Eve as they all seem quite interesting. I think I'd enjoy the Astrometrics/Exploration stuff and Mining (with the right setup) is certainly a nice way to 'grind' out money.

So on the mission front it comes down to, who's available and capable of doing it (safely) and wants a share of the loot? :p
