came across this:
http://www.semiaccurate.com/2010/06/01/hydra-and-onboard-gpu-get-married-asus/

sounds like another interesting and crazy concpet by the asus engineers, but im drawing a blank as to how the IGP could actually be useful. There aren't any display outputs on the backplate, and i seriously doubt a ROG board will be designed with some kinda hybrid garahics power saving feature.

im really curious about this...

thoughts?

Thats assuming you know what the IGP is....;)

Actually, the model I'm looking at in the RoG labs right now has a 5750 on it....it's a concept board!

well i dont suppose thats the same concept i linked to by any chance?
so if its a little more than whats found in your typical 785G, and it also has a hydra in the mix, is it just being used as a general SLI/crossfire booster?

and if so, what HW91 said :P

The board's called "Immensity" and a few sites have some pics and information from the ASUS Computex booth.

The heatsink's pretty huge anyway and doesn't get massively hot....but as it's in testing stages it makes sense to use a mid-range GPU rather than a high-end.

Actually, I imagine that if it ever makes it into reality, then the onboard GPU will act as a "power saving" GPU for people with hungry / powerful GPUs, or as the perfect solution for the majority of people - Especially considering a 5770 is completely suitable for most games!

-VK- that sounds awesome. I'm actually quite conscious about power draw when I'm just browsing the web, seems like a waste to be powering massive cards, even though they clock down considerably, though my GTX280 is stuck on 3D clocks atm. The 5770 would do the job just fine for most, probably even me if I couldn't afford something better! The only preventative factor here, considering how things are at the moment, is price. People won't see a motherboard and graphics card, they see a really expensive motherboard instead. Having said that, most of the target audience should be clued up enough.

what would be a great idea is if they added a couple more ram slots for a GPU or 2 the replaced the PCIe slots with two GTX 470/480/5870's.

make sense, more space = bigger and better cooler and you get expandable memory

i am really liking the sound of this concept, especially if hydra drivers continue to improve.

It still sounds a little odd using an onboard 5750. i mean, if its to save power in 2d mode, then i have a hd3300 right here right now, that is more than up for the task (i just dont have the cash for a discrete card atm, although i swear i did budget for one when building this rig...). And again, there arent any onboard display outputs, so to soley use the 5750, youd have to route the signal through a discrete card anyways?

If its there for a power boost to some crazy hydra mix, then surely by the time this board comes to the market, next gen cards would be out, and most likely used on this board, making any gains by a 5750 almost insignificant?

one other little niggle - if you guys decided something 5750 sized is the right size to use, then why not the mobility 5870? more shaders, less TDP...

im curious as to how (if?) this one turns out :)

edit: someone on SA reckons its a redwood chip, because of the squareness of it...

Actually, the one that people will have photo's of is different to the working unit that I had demo'd to me yesterday in the RoG labs. - Sorry for any confusion.

It's an excellent concept, hopefully it becomes production sometime soon - Interesting what you say regarding the mobile GPU - I'm sure it's something that's been considered :)

theres a new article on SA,
apparently it IS a 5750, and it's for boosting a hyda combo. apparently theres a hdmi port on the backplate, but i cant see one... if there is then i guess you could use it by itself.

and regards to the m5870, isnt it the equivilent of a 5770, but with 5750 clocks (ie, faster than a 5750), and a much smaller TDP?

still, again, loving this concept. cant wait to see this develop :)

oh, and VK, might wanna tell your engineers to chop a couple of fins off the heatsink. they appear to cover most of the first two RAM slots :p

AS thingemajib said, it does have HDMI, but its completely pointless, Ludic stuff is concept thats proven so far to not work. ACtually it "works" and from what I've read is surprisingly stable and does work in games it supports(though thats reviews, its generally end users who play games properly and will find proper problems, missing textures, buggy bits, etc).

But improved performance from a 2nd gpu, is just non existant, and seeing as thats the point behind the Lucid stuff, its pointless.

No way I'd pay for a 5750-5770 as an IGP to boost performance when it doesn't actually boost any performance, and from what I've seen, while not boosting performance absolutely destroys minimum framerates in the process.

At the moment xfire/sli will probably average a 70% boost, in its early days and worst days you'd be getting 30-40% in most games, a lot more in others. Lucid so far is averaging 2-3% while killing minimum framerates, improved drivers just aren't going to cut it to be honest.

AS for the idea of a Nvidia optimus type tech where a IGP can run windows and discrete gpu can completely power down when not in game is a great idea.

But the 5850/70 have done an immense job of power saving at idle anyway, incredibly frankly, theres only another 5-10W possible to save now really because you still want something powerful enough to run high def vid while not in games. A 5770 isn't a massive saving for idle, and frankly in 2 years everyone will be buying cpu's with more than capable gpu's on die that can handle "windows". Optimus type power saving out of games will be completely standard very shortly, paying more for an expensive board with IGP and non working lucid chip makes no sense at all, especially for the potential of saving 10w's. Ok if you have 480gtx and dual screens you could save a lot more than 10W right now, but if you're fussed about idle power usage, you shouldn't have a 480gtx to be honest.
