A Summer of traffic hell...

Plymouth.

An interesting place - it contains both vast swathes of deprived nastyness for which most people know it, but also contains some of the most fantastic scenery in any city due to the excellent natural harbour around which it's based. It's a mecca for tourists in the Summer, presumably the sort of people who can't be bothered to go somewhere decent for a holiday but thats besides the point.

The main trunk route into the city from Civilisation is pretty much a free flowing dual carriageway all the way into virtually the centre of town. Whilst most locals will bitch and moan about traffic the truth is a Plymothian doesn't really know what a traffic jam is, a 'hellish traffic jam' is one that means it takes 5-10 minutes longer to get into town.

The council, however, have decided this isn't good enough and have embarked on a many, many millions of pounds road building excercise. It's sold as some sort of massive improvement but in reality its not - they are simply converting one of the roads into town into a dedicated 'Public Transport Corridor' and as a result, are forced to upgrade the main route into town to take care of the traffic displaced from the new 'Public Transport Corridor'. The whole thing is a complete scam and will result in a net loss of road capacity into and out of the city via this route.

They have picked now to do this work, and it is going to take one year. The first phase is a 5 month - yes - 5 month closure of the main dual carriageway route into town. Instead, all traffic into town from the A38 (We dont have Motorways here, most janners think the A38 is a Motorway) is forced along a divisionary route. This route used to be two lanes of traffic outbound only (It's an odd layout but just take my word for it), but now....

I present the main route into and out of a city with a population of 270,000 people...

Just WHAT are they thinking?! Approaching peak tourist season as well.

All for a BUS ROUTE!

Needless to say its causing absolute choas. It took me 40 minutes to make a trip that would normally take 15 and that wasn't even rush hour...

They've also helped things along by needlessly coning off all the outside lanes of the various bits of dual carraigeway section we have left as a 'traffic calming' measure as well

Unbelievable. They did similar in Eastbourne while the bypass was built, resulted in the same ridiculous congestion every morning

Reminds me of one of the main roads coming into Sheffield, used to be a dual-carriageway but now one lane is for busses and taxi's only. Now 5 days a week it's just a 4 mile tailback while a completely empty lane sits there just for public transport.

Least you got your dual climate control to keep you comfy?

Pfft some people. Winge winge winge :p

It looks like they've brought the London driving experience to Plymouth :p

Which bit of the A38 have they shut?

Which road is that? Gonna guess at Penistone Road? Are they 24hour bus lanes, i've noticed most aren't but people still won't use them.

Looks like my drive to work through Warwick every working day - 2 miles in 20 minutes is a good day.

It's not the A38 - it's the bit off the A38. It's called Gydnia Way, its part of the A374.
Ah ok, what road is that you're stuck on then?

(Sorry trying to orientate myself - I'm used to coming into Plymouth from the Saltash bridge side)

Suppose you could try going through Mutley instead while roadworks are ongoing but that route is probably going to be swamped too when people work it out, although the tourists hopefully won't :p

That is Embankment Road. You wont recognise it because until yesterday it was a dual lane one way street for outbound traffic only (And I am heading inbound) - heading out of the city to rejoin A374, a dual carriageway all the way to the A38.

I'm sure its the same everywhere, Bristol's 'traffic calming measures' are absolutely infuriating, why the council have to feel the need to fix something that isn't broke is beyond me.

24 Hour bus lane on the portway anybody? I mean really??

Is anyone doing anything about it? Maybe write up a load of information for the people who live down the new 'main road' detailing where and how they can object to what has been done. I know I for one would not be happy about the level of traffic coming past my house for 5 months.

Even at 120p a litre it is cheaper for me to drive my 3 litre car into town than it is to catch a bus. Until it's cheaper, why would anyone bother? I would rather sit in my car for 45 minutes than pay more money to get a bus.. which even before the traffic choas took an hour by the time I'd walked a mile to the bus stop.

The people who live on that road wont complain about it because once the 5 months is up they will never see another car again - the road I am on in the photo will be only open to buses (And residents).
