A Summer of traffic hell...

There are plenty of other ways in to and out of the city including a dual carriageway

Having to go via Outland Road and Milehouse to get into town from Marsh Mills is as unacceptable as the current situation. Other more minor routes are now rapidly filling with traffic.

There is no good at all in any of this :)

It's ok, they made contingency plans for just this scenario. They put a little sign a couple of miles up the A38 saying "Gdynia way closed"

Local government: destroying a city near you.

Amazingly if you are local enough to know what Gdynia way is, you know its closed.

If you don't know its closed, you wont have a clue where Gydnia Way is or how it relates to your journey.

Plymouth.

An interesting place - it contains both vast swathes of deprived nastyness for which most people know it, but also contains some of the most fantastic scenery in any city due to the excellent natural harbour around which it's based. It's a mecca for tourists in the Summer, presumably the sort of people who can't be bothered to go somewhere decent for a holiday but thats besides the point.

The main trunk route into the city from Civilisation is pretty much a free flowing dual carriageway all the way into virtually the centre of town. Whilst most locals will bitch and moan about traffic the truth is a Plymothian doesn't really know what a traffic jam is, a 'hellish traffic jam' is one that means it takes 5-10 minutes longer to get into town.

The council, however, have decided this isn't good enough and have embarked on a many, many millions of pounds road building excercise. It's sold as some sort of massive improvement but in reality its not - they are simply converting one of the roads into town into a dedicated 'Public Transport Corridor' and as a result, are forced to upgrade the main route into town to take care of the traffic displaced from the new 'Public Transport Corridor'. The whole thing is a complete scam and will result in a net loss of road capacity into and out of the city via this route.

They have picked now to do this work, and it is going to take one year. The first phase is a 5 month - yes - 5 month closure of the main dual carriageway route into town. Instead, all traffic into town from the A38 (We dont have Motorways here, most janners think the A38 is a Motorway) is forced along a divisionary route. This route used to be two lanes of traffic outbound only (It's an odd layout but just take my word for it), but now....

I present the main route into and out of a city with a population of 270,000 people...

Just WHAT are they thinking?! Approaching peak tourist season as well.

All for a BUS ROUTE!

Needless to say its causing absolute choas. It took me 40 minutes to make a trip that would normally take 15 and that wasn't even rush hour...

They've also helped things along by needlessly coning off all the outside lanes of the various bits of dual carraigeway section we have left as a 'traffic calming' measure as well

Is this Gynia way ? Not exactly the main way in though is it, there is still outland road, and devonport, not to mention if coming from exeter you can just turn off at plympton take a short back lane and end up near the laira bridge.... few people know the shortcut so its never busy...

I guess they have to do the roadworks at some point.

Im more upset that they are closing the saltash tunnel for 2 months!

No, its not. It's the divisionary route.

Not exactly the main way in though is it,

Yes, it is - its the route signposted 'City Centre' for Westbound traffic off the A38.

there is still outland road, and devonport,

Which are the other side of the city.

Laira Bridge is also closed immediatly after to inbound traffic. The diversion route for that is even worse.

I guess they have to do the roadworks at some point.

But thats the point - they dont. It's all to make a bus route.

I must admit, it's a great way to ensure I avoid everything on that side of town that can't be reached via the A38...

I figured out one of the main contributors to congestion. It's people in slow moving traffic leaving big gaps in front of them while doing stuff on their phones.

Although, of course, 'only a fool breaks the two-second rule'

Whats next do you think ? Congestion charges ? :(

I hate buses, in my little village they see you they dont even stop!

Count yourself lucky, us torbay'ers have been desperate for a bypass into torquay from the A380 for 50 years all we have is a single lane route into torquay where in excess of 35,000 cars a day use the road, its normally solid traffic from 8am to 6pm.

A journey that should take ~8 minutes takes 30 or more due to the congenstion.

I do this everyday, Torquay to Exeter through Newton. Have done it since 2003 (although for almost 5 years it was from Paignton town centre, that was a fun commute!).

Most days now it's 30/40 minutes to get from our house to the park and ride at Sowton in Exeter. That's hitting the traffic there at times ranging form 7.30 onwards through to 9 depending on when I get up :)

Newton road whilst annoying as hell is never as bad as it feels, in the mornings it's 10 or 15 minutes to do about 3 miles down that road.

It's funny on the way home at Penn Inn seeing people shoot up to go the milber back road, then we pass the same car coming down through the willows estate when turning into our road, happens all the time.

So whilst they might have been moving all the while the journey actually took the same amount of time :p

Threads like this remind me why I'm happy to be able to walk to work in under 10 minutes.

Doesn't stop me getting occasionally caught up in the A6 Quality Bus Corridor on work business, but that's on work time :D

At least it dosn't seem as bad as the trams in Edinburgh.

5 years and over £500m to replace a single bus route!

Funny thing is that the busses in Edinburgh are actually quite good so its really not needed

I hate it when they call things like this ''investing in public transport''.

Do it properly FFS build a skytrain/lightrail or a metro system or some kind of elevated railroad or well, anything that doesn't go at the cost of something else. Not trading road space in for buses.

What moronic ( council) party is in charge in plymouth ?
EDIT: Tories? Really, why on earth does a conservative party favor public transport over cars ?

To give an impression of the traffic Gdynia Way see, it ends as a 3 lane entrance onto a roundabout (actually it's 2 lanes onto the roundabout and 1 lane that runs constantly to the first exit on the roundabout) and they've replaced it with a single lane.

Utter lunacy.

Had to go to faraday mill yesterday, gave up and drove back home.

Try living in Windermere, queues from Windermere station all the way past Ings to Staveley.

It took me ****ing ages to get out of the Lakes on Teusday, partly because someone decided to start their holiday by wiping out 50 yards of crash barrier on the M6.

And they want to build a massive Hotel between Shepherds and Aquatic, that'll fix the traffic. And they want a floating stage, yet as any local will tell you, a noise made on the lake on a clear night will be heard at both ends of the 10 mile long mere and at the top of Windermere 3 miles away.

AAAAAARG!
