Need a good multimedia phone!

I honestly am struggling to find a phone that ticks all the boxes. I currently have a 3GS and a desire with the initial idea being i was going to sell the 3GS to me dad and go completely android, so whoop i thought.

However, the problem is the video recording quality is actually slightly worse than my 3GS and i cant use the flash (i believe this will come in froyo though?). Also the audio recording quality and loud speaker play back is very poor. I expected the camcorder and audio to be at least average for what you pay and at least match the 3GS.

So the dilemma i have is should i keep the desire and hope these issues are fixed? I much prefer android over the iphone OS now so i would really like to keep it and get rid of the 3GS. The other option is to sell both and go for the new iphone, which should solve the multimedia side of things, but would once again leave me with steve jobs telling me what i can and can't do all the time.

The other option is the Xperia X10, which is due to get 2.1 i believe, but in Q4 2010  i'm not going to hold my breath on that update.

Any thoughts??

Cheers

This is an unfortunate problem, smartphones tend to have rubbish cameras.

The X10 would appear to have the best Android camera, but 1.6 is a bit old hat and nasty :( Still, you might be able to live with that for now.

If you aren't too fussed about Android, the N900 has a very good camera and video camera, nothing groundbreaking but it's one of the best I've used. Problem with that is, it's pretty much an abandoned phone by Nokia so you might not like it :p

The N8 could be worth a look as mentioned by the fellow above.

No solid details on the new iPhone yet, I'd hold fire until they are announced. You never know, they might have slapped a decent camera on it for a change

Cheers for the info on the N8, looks great for multimedia. However i would prefer to be using android so i was wondering if the Desire is going to get any updates at all as far as recording audio at aac quality instead of amr? I downloaded an audio recorder app earlier just to test it and it produced much better quality audio than the stock recorder. It seems its definitely a software issue that could easily be addressed in my opinion. I've got a feeling led video flash support will be coming with 2.2 (as it has done with the nexus) so if it updates that and the audio quality i'd personally be quite happy to stick with the desire.

There certainly is the potential for audio updates and some talk of HD video recording so you are probably best off sticking with it to be honest. You aren't going to find anything that is brilliant with regard to camera/video on a new phone anyway sadly :(

if your using the camera a lot then isnt a dedicated camera a better bet ?

satio would be the best phone for photos/video by far but the use of it as an actual phone is very average

Agree with both points, the software on the Satio is pretty dire though, thus why I didn't suggest it :(

It sounds like the X10 meets your requirements. It's not a standard built of 1.6 of Android that runs on the device, most of the features have been lifted from 2.1.

Sony Ericsson have said the device will receive the 2.1 update in q4 2010. This also brings extra features and functions to the handset. If you look at the SE product blog for more details or the X 10 thread.

The X10 running its current firmware R1FB001 is pretty speedy.

I've moved from a iPhone 3GS myself and I have not look back since, its leagues ahead of the iPhone with its multimedia capabilities.

Any questions on the X10 just ask. :)

Cheers :) is there an option to use the led flash when shooting a video by any chance? It's quite a useful feature to have and yet I can never find any info on this on any spec sheets.

The X10 doesn't have a LED Flash, I believe Sony Ericsson call it a Photo Light or words to that effect. So you can constantly have it turned on or off, which may or may not help with shooting video.

If you looking for a good flash the Satio has a Xenon Flash which is brilliant at night stuff.
