Grumble grumble...cheap car

Spooky got the same deal happening on my Clio on Sunday, meeting in Bristol etc :p

Presumably they nicked your car after touching you inappropriately?

Meeting him at my friends flat in cheltenham now anyway, bit further to go but safer and less hassle

Trying to keep this on cars, was at the auction yesterday and saw an interesting curveball. Chrysler PT cruiser - for the spec and condition it seemed like a bargain and I actually like the looks, presume they're crap though?

Please stop doing this to me :(

It's like asking a small child if he wants some candy and then shouting at him when he begins to eat the candy.

Nobodys asking you to keep posting or even looking, if all you can do is throw petty personal digs around then what are you actually achieving? Or you could just say 'yep, they're crap, glad you avoided it'. Call me blind for liking the looks if you like, but at least keep it relevant. Just because I'm not going about buying a car the way you would, it's no excuse to keep trashing a perfectly reasonable thread

There has to come a point though when you realise its pointless, right?

You've been asking our 'advice' over the space of 3 months and probably what, 5-10 threads now, some of them huge. You've not taken a single peice of that advice, and usually had a bit of a dummy-out session in the process of being given it because people, usually me, point out the often gaping flaws in your logic.

This in itself isn't exactly bad - its your money not ours and you dont need to do what the internet people tell you. But the very fact you never, ever take our advice surely must say that you don't need or want it really?

Why keep asking a group of people for advice if what they tell you is never really what you want to hear?

Just find a car you like and buy it. And then dont post it about incase the nasty people find it amusing.

Every bit of advice I've been given has been taken into consideration but I'm still going to make my own decision. It's not about hearing what I want to hear - I've asked for opinions and facts and generally the advice has been useful and I used it to help in my decision making process. It hasn't been my entire decision making process though, and I think thats where you're struggling with this.

You think I went out and bought the Saab on a whim - wrong. I did a ton of research, I looked at 4 of them, did some more research and bought the best one I could fully understanding what was involved. You've just made the assumption, yet again, that I'm an idiot because I dont share your views and that I'd go and do something as stupid as buying a car without doing any research.

I didn't do any of the research here partly because there's not a great deal of Saab knowledge around here (compared to other places), but mainly because you wouldn't be able to resist trashing the thread with pointless Vectra comments or other similar tripe.

This thread is a change of situation, a change of priorities and a request for help to put together a list of suitable cars that I can choose between. I've been courteous enough to, on the whole, keep it all into one thread so it's easy for people who arent interested to ignore. You clearly have no interest in offering any real help, so why do you even bother opening this thread when there's a new post?

Back on topic. No mate, stick with the 406 idea.

Aye, exactly as I thought. I quite like things that are a bit different so if it happened to be a good car it would have appealed, but I didn't expect it to be! 406 is probably top of the list at the moment, provided I can find a tidy one. Although there's a really nice red 306 D Turbo HDI in Cornwall that looks nice too

That's the problem. I do have an interest in helping you and have attempted to on numerous occasions. But you change direction so often and drip feed up so many bizarre situations that its hard to do so any more.

The PT Cruiser is rubbish by the way.

Why not Just pick up a mk3 Mondeo? You know and like the car.

Presumably they nicked your car after touching you inappropriately?

That's the plan anyway :)

It's a guy from an owners club, his dad has some back problems and to drive all the way down to me is another 3 hours on their journey time so said I'd meet them in Bristol.

Yes my direction and priorities have changed quite regualrly, that's part of life. That's also why discussing things in a community like this can work quite well.

I've had to drip feed bits of the situation because if I didn't give any information at all, I'd just be slated because you (and others) would assume I've just decided the Saab is rubbish. I have absolutely no desire or need to give all the details of the background situations on here, so it's ended up like this. You're not the only culprit, but the little digs about my intelligence are really beginning to grind. I'm perfectly happy with a bit of banter but I think you're taking it a bit far - I'm being honest, coherent and I'm not trolling so some of the comments are really unecessary.

The budget isn't ideal for a Mondeo really. There was an immaculate 2.0 Zetec Mk2 at the auction yesterday, went through for £450 - so even if it needed a few quid mechanically it would still be a good cheap buy. Mk3s at 2~3k seem to be pretty shabby on the whole. I also don't really fancy having the same car again, variety and all that. I'm really just after what the Mondeo gave me - practical, reliable, comfortable, low running costs. Just without the shortcomings of the TDCI - that's whats led me to the 406 HDI

It absolutely is enough for a mk3. A mint 02 is worth no more that this. Sure the majority are shabby but that's a 2k car thing not a mk3 Mondeo thing. The 406 will be no less shabby on average.

This is why I'm working on the basis of making a list of suitable cars, rather than spending months trying to find a mint example of one particular car, it increases my chances of finding something decent. The main reason for excluding the Mondeo is mainly because I've had one before, but also because I really dislike the prefacelift interior!

On a sidenote, there was a mk3 last night that was a prime example of condition over mileage. 2005 1.8 LX with 350,000 miles on it - looked absolutely immaculate. Went for about 3k IIRC

Dont buy a 2k car at the auction, at least give yourself half a chance of something decent by driving it first.

Might have been less, wasn't paying much attention to it as it wasnt of interest, but I remember being surprised how much it went for. Ripe for clocking probably!

I wouldn't spend my entire budget at an auction, but I'm not against spending a grand on something worth a lot more and putting some money aside to fix it up. Would actually quite enjoy doing a wheeler dealers number on something :)

FWIW the PT cruiser was a 2002, special edition with the "chrome pack", 2.0 with leather, nav etc and 80k miles on it. Immaculate bodywork and interior, £1200

I'm sorry, but I can't believe this. I have my doubts that many 350,000 mondeos exist, let alone ones that sell at auction for £3,000.

See above, wasnt paying a lot of attention to it but I was surprised at what it went for. Auctions seem to be what appeals to the trade - unfortunately there are lots of unscrupulous dealers out there who will see an immaculate high mileage car as a good opportunity to make a quick buck

That kind of milage for a sales rep is doable, just that most people get rid of the cars within a year or 2 and don't keep piling them on :p

My dad used to rep and changed his car every 2 years, they'd have silly milage on them when they went.
