A Summer of traffic hell...

I live in St Jude's....this work is beyond moronic. I don't have a car round here but it's constant traffic outside as more people find the back roads.

What moronic ( council) party is in charge in plymouth ?
EDIT: Tories? Really, why on earth does a conservative party favor public transport over cars ?

Free quango money from the old Government?

They tried to bribe the Greater Manchester area with the "Transport Innovation Fund" "fixing" years of systemic neglect of the public transport in exchange for road tolls that would charge me £2 to pop to Tesco. We sensible folk told them to stuff it with a 4-1 vote against it.

Reasons not to go to Plymouth before - 21,463

Reasons not to go to Plymouth now - 21,464

Oh well.

that looks like a nightmare, I don't think I could handle sitting in that sort of traffic every day. Off topic but I wonder if every city will have a congestion charge in the end? I've heard they are planning this for Liverpool city centre :(

I almost went the Plymouth last week, glad I didn't now.

Our council always like trying to improve the roads, but they always end up making them worse.

Abingdon is an absolute joke all year round when it comes to traffic. It's such a poxy town with naff all in the centre, yet it's still jammed solid every day

The only blessing is half terms when it eases a little

If they only built a northbound A34 slip road at the north side of Abingdon, that would fix everything, instead everyone wanting to go on the A34 North has to go through town

Buses are immune to road traffic?

Most of plymouth is now 3 lane with one lane being bus' though taxis seem to use it and actually stop in it to drop off instead of parking in taxi ranks and so buses then barge their way into the car lane instead (and stop in it in some cases).

Wish plymouth was still dual carrigway through royal parade, its bedlam now, 3 sets of traffic lights and a bus lane in 1/4 a mile of main road. pathetic.

I used to live in Witney and my work then would take me to Abingdon frequently. It was hell back in 96 so wouldn't like to think what its like now!

It's a million times worse mate

They made the road around Stratton Way (the one that follows the high street and then round the back) two way to try and "ease" traffic. Instead it made it worse as people now use the new lane to back home through town instead of using the ring road

Least you got your dual climate control to keep you comfy?

Pfft some people. Winge winge winge :p

Exactly, we love bus lanes especially when you catch the bus, it's so quick these days here. :)

One man in tin box rant. :p

Not sure what the big deal is,

Having lived in Plymouth for 18 years, and knowing all the rat-runs very well, only a daft lemming would take the main route into Town, it's always chokka on a w/e anyway.. :)

I have to say that even when I'm down in Plymouth now, after a few years away, I see people still haven't twigged where the rat-runs are.. No doubt people will move onto the lesser travelled secondary routes, but even then there are nice shortcuts all over the place..

Which road have they closed? the Embankment/Billacombe road? there is quite some distance from the A38 to town, and several routes in, so I'm not sure which are being affected at the moment.. (Might be down in Plymouth tomorrow anyway, so would appreciate a heads up!)

Entering Gosport is like that on a weekday going home from work (only 2 major roads inbound) BUT thanks to Google navigation I have found a few shortcuts that bypass the gridlocked areas and join at the end and saves me 15~ minutes \m/

Most people post as if its surprising that these incredible decisions are being made when really they are not that incredible, they want to make life for the motorist as difficult and as expensive as possible so really these amazingly ridiculous ideas that they come up with are actually a good idea from their point of view.

You think thats bad, have you been through Hindhead in the last two years or so? Its pretty crap for commuters being a main route to London from in and around Portsmouth, but it must be truly terrible for the residents of the town. I don't think I've ever got through Hindhead on a commute in less than half hour, and thats to travel about a mile. Even on a Saturday its taken me just as long.

To top it all off, I learnt the other day that they are turning the road through Hindhead into two cu-de-sacs once the tunnel is open, so no one can just pass through that way if they need fuel, or to stop for a drink etc.

The crossroads at Hindhead were always a bottleneck at peak times, at least building this tunnel will hopefully improve that, not that I care as I haven't lived there for 10 years heh.

Err surely you mean A34 SOUTH (North is TOWARDS Oxford)
The only way to join the A34 going South (away from Oxford) is via Marcham road, which goes right though the centre :(

And traffic in all the major Urban areas sucks in this country :(
