1 of my Fan Blades has broken off [ half of the Blade], I can't afford a new Cooler for 2 weeks, would it fine to Superglue the half Blade back on, or would it be ok to run it with half the Blade
Any views would be helpful..
Thanks.. :)

Wouthout the blade it will run extremely unbalanced and you may run into further problems. If you superglue it well it will hold and should tide you over but is not risk free either. I'm not sure an rma would work as i don't think the manufacturer will believe this has happened without human error. I have glued a blade back on a fan after i ventured into my case while it was on (oops lol) before and it ran fine until i replaced the fan. If you have a spare fan about use it to spot cool the card as well until you get a new heatsink :)

Good luck if you rma, fan blades just don't fall off on thier own.

Fans can have fracture faults just like anything else, rare but it does happen.

My First AMD stock Athlon 4800 heatsink fan cracked right at the base of one of the blades & was making a racket & which lead me to open up the case in the first place & in the end 2 of the bladed cracked but did not fall off.

That maybe true but this break looks like a it was caused by an obstruction, it's a distinctive break shape. I hope he can get an rma though.

Don't worry about what people have said about it being unbalenced It will be fine but don't try and glue it back on or that could effect it, efficiency wise you will lose a small amount of CFM (airflow) but nothing major, you'll probably see temps rise by a degree or two

Computer fans aren't really very precise in their design (I work in ventilation and air conditioning) and I doubt very much blade geometry comes into the card design, it will be more a case of "we need a [size] fan for our card that moves [airflow], can we have it in red?"

Well, firstly try it, it might not be that badly unbalanced, if you're confident in putting on a new cooler, ask them to send you just a cooler, it will cost them less and you'll spend less time without a card.

Unbalanced fans generally don't work very well, and its fairly likely a glued on fan blade will be hard to get "perfect" anyway.

its always a shame when you have to RMA for something so silly and little but they probably won't just send you a replacement cooler. Maybe theres a chance whoever you bought it from has a spare cooler from a duff card they wouldn't mind installing or sending to you.

balance wont be an issue here, that fan is small so it will spin at a high rpm (by fan standards) in order to create the necessary airflow, the centrifugal force will overwhelm the missing blade and keep it in balance

Glue it on as the shop will not fix it as they will think it was your fault, the only time ive had damage like that was when i put my finger in a fan :P like you say you are getting a new cooler anyhow.

So how did it break it? Or are you not going to tell us! ;)

I've seen people using a hoover or compressed air without securing the fan and it exploding, but that break and fan design doesn't look like it could be caused by that.

Hello mate,

Is that this card http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-167-XF&tool=3

As im building a pc for someone, they told me today they want the xfx card with the fan in the middle ? so i just spotted this.

If so, how do you find it. noise, temps ?
Any chance you could put a pic up of the top of the card please. if not, does it look the same as the reference cards that say ATI RADEON on the top?

And just RMA the card mate ;)

Thanks a lot.

Hi .. Contacted XFX and explained the situation about the Blade, they told me this could have being caused by a stray Cable [ NOT !.. ]
I said I would have noticed this, I could'nt return it to the shop as it was bought as a gift, and can't find the reciept..
Anyhow when the Fan was running fine, the Card was extremly QUIET !!, Can't remember Temps as most of my time was playing Games not Temp watching sorry..:(
I believe this is the Card you on about with the link as I got Aliens v Preadator with it, its a Digital Download and not a DVD Disc !! you need to sign up to Steam..
Moving on. I went on Amazon and bought myself a Arctic Cooling Accelero Pro Twin Blade Cooler for about £28 total, fitted it today again extremely quiet in operation, Sorted ! :D
