Ford Focus 1.6 so not a beast. Got some tyres via BlackCircle and picked the right size and a speed rating of H (130mph). The wheels already on the car were rated to V (140+mph).
I just got 2 for the front as the backs were ok but the guy made me print off the order and sign it as he was saying they shouldn't downgrade the tyres and the insurance company might use it as a clause to not pay out.

This a load of tosh? Would the insurance company really use something like that to dodge should they be called on?
Cheers :)

Perhaps if you claimed on your insurance and there was evidence of you exceeding 130MPH?

The only law regarding tyres is that they have a legal tread depth - so cant see any other reason why the insurance company wouldnt pay out. Good luck getting a 1.6 focus to 130 though :D

How the hell would your insurance company know what rating tyres you had on there before... He was just upset he had less beer money that evening...

Having owned a 1.6 Focus before, you'll have a lot more worrying to do if you got to 130mph, like what in the world happened to make you get to 130mph, cause it wasn't the engine thats for sure! :D Think i managed 115mph or so GPS/ 125 indicated before everything was flat out.

i honestly wouldnt be suprised if an insurer would attempt to refuse indemnity due to you running with the incorrect tyres for your car

Putting high end sports tryres on a car isn't the manufacturers specification but at the end of the day gives you a safer driving experience.

The only way an insurance company will get you is if you are doing >130mph on tyres rated for 130mph which isn't going to happen in a focus 1.6

Load of rubbish. I had to replace my old front's on my Focus 3 weeks ago as they were worn and they were V rated tyres and my new ones were H, I originally asked for V as I just went by the spec that was on the original tyres but the bloke told me H would be fine as I would never do 140mph lol I never had to sign anything either when I got the tyres done.

Edit - I think the max the 1.6 Zetec SE engines can do is around 120mph or around that?

And not to mix crossply and radial tyres. And using a tyre not suitable for the use of the vehicle. And the tyre not being inflated properly. And if the tyre has been cut, exposing cords. And if the tyre has a bulge.

Have you had a look at sticker on the drivers door jam to see what that says?

I was in a similar quandry re XL (extra load) tyres for my car but the little sticker said 91Y so that's what I went with even though the current tyres were 94W.
