Dr. Kay Segler, BMW M GmbH's Managing Director, confirms the 1-Series M and Turbo M5

Can’t wait to see the full specs for these babies. 2011 promises to be a good year in more ways than one.

If the suggested figures in the article are correct, and we do see close to 600HP, we could be looking at a high 3.x s 0-62. It's 911 Turbo power/weight territory.

i doubt it

The reason the 911 manages it is due to impressive traction from the 4WD and the engine directly over the rear wheels increasing grip.

Rear Wheel Drive saloon cars with no weight over the rear wheels usually struggle to get good 0-60 times.

i bet the mid range in gear times (say 30-70mph) would be nearly as good however.

It'll certainly be interesting. The F10 M5 should have 1000 KG over the rear wheels; with a set of modern tyres, a good transmission with launch control and good conditions I think we'll be getting close.

Something like the Ferrari 612 manages a 4.0s dead 0-62 dash with 540 HP weighing 1880 KG (287 HP/ton).

No, that responsibility is held by chief taster for Mr Kipling.

surely the best job in the world has to be the people who own their own companies for whom their input is no longer required.

They can now sit back in their yacht in monaco harbour and just let the money role in.

True but being head of M division and getting to own and drive all these cars must be an incredible experiance for anyone.

when you have a massive super yacht parked in monaco harbour, who cares about cars as "cheap" as BMWs when you've most probably got a Lambo in Florida, the Veyron in Monaco with you, and an RS6 to "tootle about in" around london ?

To us normal folk without liquid cash that runs into 8 figures, BMWs M cars are aspirational cars, but for those that are seriously rich, they arent imaginative enough !

Hopefully the New BMW "Supercar" will change their image and put them up there with ferrari and the like.

Youre going to break a lot of OCUK hearts with talk like that

Ruining the reputation of one of motoring's most loved Brands? :o

I love forced induction, but on a M-Car? Do not want.

They started to devalue the brand when they made M-sport a trim level rather than it indicating any level of performance. The M sub brand has been going the same way since they introduced the X6M.

Most 911's are 2wd but I see the point you make. 4wd is really not needed on a 911 in my opinion.

So in 1979 then?

I would probably say when they started introducing watered down "sport" models which are immensely disappointing, especially compared the the real deal. The target market how ever laps them up, individuals who cannot afford or justify a real sports orientated car but have been fooled into thinking an M sport model will do as it is almost as good, when in reality it is no where near a real M car or alternative model car that was designed with performance in mind.

Ah, so you mean the first time there was a genuine M car in the range and a 'Sport' model which didnt have the M power, just the M looks, sporty seats, suspension etc?

So 1986?

There is nothing 'immensely dissapointing' about a typical BMW Sport model. You should try one, and I mean really try one, rather than inevent a story about borrowing a mates once over the course of several pages of a previous thread ;)

Without these models to provide BMW with the profit it needs, the M Powered cars would simply not exist.

Depends on what sort of driver you are, and your skill level.

As someone without much driving skill, but the want to drive fast, the C4 makes sense, hence why i (well, my GF as a shared car) got one over a C2. C4 on local greasy, broken, gravelly, uneven roads covers ground at a very decent rate in comparison to a C2, which i find scary to drive and therefore cannot push with confidence in such conditions. The Turbo is a total real world weapon due to its 4wd.
