So OcUK have returned my XFX 4870x2 to manufacturers for repair, but most likely replacement. The scenario given was I would be credited with cash to get another card, and was wondering what would be the most suitable alternative? Built my rig 10 months back with a Gigabyte GA-X48-DS5 socket775 DDR2, was wondering if the latest 5850's-5970's would fit and be supported?
No idea how much I'll get back, have been told to expect a like-for-like but what that turns out to be only time will tell.. Suggestions on a new card though?

i can guarantee you wont get back nothing like you paid for it if you get offered credit.

Thats been the case for me when i returned things after 28 days anyway you might be lucky and get offered a alternative replacement however.

i would have thought a 5850 or 5870.

wow didnt realise the 4870x2 was all the way up there performance wise, makes me want to get it repaired and sent back rather than get a new card now! Still, will make the best of the situation and if it is irrepairable, get a 5870 and hope the difference from credit isnt too muhc of a sting

Could always hope for a like-for-like replacement and have a 5970 sent my way...!

My XFX 4870x2 is going back to the manufacturer too. This is with a different e-tailor and there's zero information what the replacement could be. Seems like a bit of a gamble to me. I have a feeling it will turn out to be something like a £80 credit note

Only £80? Faulty ones on ebay go for more than that. Here's hoping they can fix whatever it is... otherwise my credit card will have another hammering. Have 4870x2s a rep for melting quicker or just bad luck?

Unless the card comes as X2 I'll be using a single, not got the technical confidence to try setting up two cards (not even overclocked any of my parts ever, that's how much confidence I lack!)
Only been two days but I miss gaming already, jesus Im a sad case

I too, have never overclocked, or set up two individual cards ever.

However, setting up crossfire/sli, is simple.

Just put the cards in to the pci x 16 slots, link with crossfire/sli bridge, install the corresponding drivers, and just turn on in the driver control panel sli/crossfire.

Easy as that, its not technically hard.

Maybe some one could tell me, if with crossfire, one MUST install the catalyst contraol center to get crossfire to work.

Becuase when I install ATI drivers, I just install the display driver.

I hate ccc!

Think I may venture into crossfire in the future, as for now I'm going to go with an asus directCU 5850 or a sapphire 5850, £15 more for the asus but extra year warranty. Left me with the notion that whatever happens to my old 4870x2 currently being repaired that either it gets repaired adn sent back, I'll ebay it, or I get credited for current value (meh) in which case I'll get a 5850 anyway, or I get sent a replacement, and depending which it is, may sell that on or sell the 5850 I'm goign to buy this weekend and sue said rpelacement. Either way, waiting until XFX have sorted it out, I'll end up doing the same thing now as I would three weeks or so down the line.

Now to decide between those two, I'm liking the silent factor of the directCU and the extra year warranty too...

Have been told that both can overclock fairly easily to stock 5870's too, and hell if need be once prices come down can get another for a cheapish upgrade.
