Intel Core 2 Quad QX9650 3.0 GHz for £175???

Thanks for all the input on this guys. I didn't end up buying it in the end purely because it did seem to good to be true. I am still on the lookout for a good 45nm quad as I don't need to upgrade to i7 really.

On the auction the guy has already sold 10 (says on the page) so maybe it was a legit chip, I just wasn't willing to take the risk.

I think it's probably legit. I bought a QX9650 off these very forums over 1 year ago for 180.

Though I think you should go i5 or i7 as 775 quad prices are ridiculous, even 180 for a qx9650 is stupid.

Avoid it as an I7-920 smokes this by a long way & seriously doubt anyone has gotten hold of a brand new supply of these so long after they were made as most supplies bought these on special order outside of the big etailors!

Anyone can claim they have 10 OEM versions how would you know the difference & if they had not been heavily overclocked at some time??

Ask yourself this why on earth do you want to buy 3+ year old tech which now only has the unlocked multi as the main selling point??

i believe that is pointless recommending a i7 to him since he was looking at upgrading his cpu, the i7 and the qx9650 are different sockets so unless he is looking to spend more money which he would be if he looking to move to i7, i would recommend the qx9650 if he looking to overclock and have unlock multiples

Yep seems logical to me too, although I personally don't see the QX chips giving that much advantage over the normal Q chips either.

the only advantage with a QX is that you would be able to push your chip even further because of multiples are unlocked, meaning the cpu should run a bit cooler and stable...but also that does depends on setup not all system are like

Bought one of these from a well-known auction site for £179 + postage that used that exact same image in the listing. Was wondering exactly what I would get due to the price & happily enough I did get a brand new completely unmarked QX9650. I've stress tested it for the past 26 hours at stock just to make absolutely sure it isn't faulty and it passed with no problems.

Next task, overclocking it with my rather temperamental Striker II Extreme.

Its clearly not new if he/she has provided those pictures

They (they being a shop that also sells on the particular auction site) had in excess of 10 available for this sale & had sold many in previous auctions so I guess those pictures were provided using one of them at some point!

In which case you are not guaranteed it has the same VID, can reach 4ghz etc

Well the only thing in life that is truly guaranteed is death isn't it. Getting stable settings on one board certainly doesn't mean you will guarantee the exact same stability if you swap it into an identical board/setup. Everything in life has its little quirks & none more so than PC hardware.

Spot on. :D

I like the thought of having a QX9650 in my pc also. I might even stretch to a QX9770.

The QX9650 is available from the far east on that well known internet auction site for £185.00 OEM in as new condition.

It will be hassle if it is faulty though.

Also just to clarify on the QX9650, i see it is a 130W processor, does this mean it would need the 8 pin CPU power connector being used and not the 4 pin like on my Q9300.

why bother with older platforms when newer cheaper ones are around :)

The cost of a new CPU vs the cost of a new CPU/mobo/RAM/cooler, yeah I can see how that would be cheaper.

Don't be in a rush and hold out for a Q9650, one will come along eventually.
