Lunchtime news has been reporting BP claiming to still be optimistic and will know in an hour or two.

On theoildrum some posters have claimed oil is making it to the surface through the pipe though decline from speculating on quantities.

I wonder if BP will claim partial success but concede they need a few adjustments to make it more effective.

Might get the media off their back long enough to try top hat #8 or fabricate #9

From this angle you can see the top hat moving.

It looks like the bell of the top hat is wider than the pipe it sits on and jangles around. As the bell moves to one side and the gap widens it releases an eruption of oil from the same side.

The triangle in my circle is a good reference point against the lower metalwork.

I like this report:

Venice, Louisiana (CNN) -- Oil is being siphoned from the ruptured well in the Gulf of Mexico to the surface, where it's flowing on board a ship, BP said Friday.

The news comes after the oil company lowered a cap over the ruptured well Thursday night. On Friday, BP was planning to close four vents atop the containment cap, through which oil was still gushing into the Gulf.

The company hoped very little oil would escape once the vents were shut, BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said. He said he was optimistic that the "cut and cap" operation, which hit a snag earlier in the week, will be successful.

"I think it should work," he said.
