Not enough seats on trains? Solution: remove even more seats and make everyone stand up. The justification is that passenger numbers aren't going to increase by as much as predicted because of the credit crunch; but things are bad enough at the moment.

No doubt they'll concentrate on making the roads worse as well so as to punish people for not using the wonderful new veal-crate express service. Aren't spending cuts great!? At least TOC shareholders will be happy.

Come on, we knew this was coming, and more cuts to follow. No need to be outraged about it, we need to dig ourselves out of the financial hole El Gordo got us into.

Edit: and if you want to be taken seriously, don't link to a Daily Fail story.

Great idea, can’t remember the last time I got a seat in the rush hour. We don’t need them, get rid of them all and have special rush hour trains. The more we can pack in the better. ;)

I always get a seat on the Caterham/Tattenham corner line due to living near the end :) I get to sit there smugly watching people slowly packed in like cattle ... station by station... until we get to Norwood Junction and you hear the panicked plea - "Can you move down please!!!".

What? I thought the new government was going to save the economy by efficiency savings, cutting Quangos and firing lazy civil servants, not by not investing in the stuff the country actually needs. Are you suggesting that the new government are a bunch of lying toe-rags as well? ;)

We all know the fantastic capacity the Daily Mail has for stirring or even creating garbage. It should be a rule, that threads can't be created with the use of a link from there; a referance from somewhere else has to be used instead. If one can't be found though...:p

Out of interest, how long is the train Journey the OP is worried about?

That directly affects me? I regularly have to get the First Crapital Connect from Three Bridges to City Thameslink, Farringdon or Kings Cross and which takes approx one hour. If I'm lucky (and quicker than the disabled chap ;) ) I can sometimes get a seat at East Croydon when some people get off.

My Dad was once unable to get a seat on a Virgin train from Preston all the way to Euston - he had a "First Class" ticket so was able to stand in a First Class carriage all the way though, so at least he didn't have to stand next to anyone ghastly ;)

No one said that, YOU said that, the FIRST 6 BILLION is in efficiency savings, they need to cut spending by another 100billion+ to "break even", services need to be cut back.

You can't simply provide service the country can't pay for, Labour don't seem to understand this, the way they ran, and you seem to want the country run, is that in a decade, China will literally own us, our interest payments will be so crippling the rest of the world will NOT BUY OUR DEBT.

At that point, government SHUTS DOWN, NHS, stopped, police, stopped, public service stop.

Can you not understand the simple basic idea that, if the debt gets to big we're absolutely and utterly completely ******.

What was the yearly deficit a decade ago,

http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=277 just the last 4 years has been a horrific increase, pre and post "recession" spending was well on the up.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8569418.stm

One of the reasons these countries are in massive trouble is their deficit is such a high percentage of GDP, we're WORSE than Greece, Ireland, Spain, Italy, all countrys in major trouble.

our overall debt is slightly better, but as you can see from the deficit in 5 years it will MASSIVELY overtake the two countries in the EU who are in the worst trouble.

Read through it, a sustainable % is around 4%, we're at 13%, its utter madness.

If you don't understand what will happen when the country collapse's, learn, when you do, stop posting about cutting our deficit being a bad thing.

I'm honestly just so fed up of seeing your anti Tory, Labour are so good, why the cuts, boo, utter tripe. Labour would have seen unemployment rocket and public services cut to absolutely nothing they way they've been spending in 10 years time, because there won't be money left to do anything except pay off debt.

I think actually looking at it, our deficit there has been exaggerated somewhat for the last couple of years because our GDP has declined during the course of the recession, and the numbers for the deficit and the debt are relative to our GDP. This implies if our deficit remains the same in absolute terms, then with a significantly decreased GDP (as we have experienced), the deficit should appear to be much higher on that graph.

given the appalling cost to benefit ratio of rail, no other decision could be made rationally...

They could make a hell of a lot more room on trains by scrapping the first class carriages and replacing them with standard class.....

im no train designer but why dont they have rows like the cinmea, but only have 1 isle to the door?

sure there be people getting in the way but in theory there would be more seats than just resting against the edges like on tube?

Errr trains don't have seating against the edges as per the tube, with the exception of the odd one or two seats per coach.
