hi, mate wants to build a gaming rig for around £500, allready has, os, hdd, dvd drive, case. would like a quad core as thats where games are going, price difference between 5770 and 5830 seems to be worth it now. can he do any better than this? also does it all work together as dont have much experience with amd builds. thanks.

Seems pretty solid, although if he can stretch to a 5850 it would be far superior from what i've heard.

Also get this ram as it's £20 cheaper

ok thanks for the advice. i was going to get that cheaper ram but corsair stuff has a good rep for quality. regarding stulids build wouldn't a 400 watt psu be too little for a 5830? it seems to consume more than a 5850 and that requires 500 watt i think.

it'll be fine, that corsair psu is capable of outputting 450w.

if your still worried, then for an extra £10, antec have a 550w psu for sale.

This review shows the power consumption with a Intel i7 test rig.

this should be fairly futureproof:

not quite as much graphics power, but still got your preferred corsair ram, in a more futureproof ddr3 form, and the psu should handle a 5850 should your mate want to upgrade later, provided you dont run a million hard drives and fans as well...

edit: slightly cheaper but faster corsiar ram (this week only)

My housemate is running his 5850 fine using 1 6 pin and 1 molex to 6 pin adaptor, but ofc it's safer to pick a PSU which has 2x 6 pin.

hmm never thought of the pcie connectors on the psu. seems my original speced ocz psu only has 1 6 pin also. might spec more on the psu and skimp more with the cheaper ram in that case.

edit ah no it doesnt it has 1 6 pin and 1 6+2 pin which i assume means the 6+2 means you can use it as a 2nd 6 pin or an 8 pin. in that case think my original spec is still looking pretty good. or might suggest the cheaper ram and the corsair tx650 psu which seems to have 2 6+2 pin connectors which would help if he ever needs a gfx card with 2 8 pins, but then you lose the modular convenience of the ocz.

thanks for the advice guys
