Evening everyone.

This could be a very.... vague? question. Im looking for a new tele for the worldcup. I dont have, nor want sky or sky HD - i simply refuse to pay their prices.

What id like;

Freesat HD built in would be nice; But i can get external if needbe.
46" Up, no smaller
LED TV

Ill be getting a new home cinema too, but thats after the tv purchase.

Any tips greatful :)

why do you specifically want LED? plasma's have better picture quality, especially on SD channels. also the fact you want a minimum of 46" tv which will cost at least £1200 for an LED 46" yet refuse to pay £25 a month for sky. a tad strange

interesting. honestly i only wanted it because i thought that was the 'new' and best to have?

nothing is definitive in home cinema

the LCD vs plasma debate is still very much raging.

If you are going to get an LCD, samsung will tell you that LED backlighting is the way forward.

However, none of them yet are locally dimming - the ability to turn off backlighting on certain parts of the board.

They just swapped CCFL tubes for LED strips.

is a very technical and in dept review site. Far more than any highstreet publication.

Thats where i'd start.

Then go hunting on the net for what you can afford.

new doesnt mean best. pioneers 9th generation kuro made over 2 years ago is still better than any tv made today.

more importantly what is your budget? you cant just say you want a minimum of 46" and have no budget. you can get a 50" tv for £600 and another 50" tv for £2500.

man just get an lcd tv - much cheaper, yeh led looks all nice but really its just a bloody tv! and the fact that you arent getting real hd channels just further means led is pointless.

led is just another gimmick companies use to try and get you to spend money when you dont need too....panasonic neopdp anyone??? wtf does that even me!!!! lol

As far as I was aware multiple manufacturers (including Samsung who you mentioned) have local dimming full array TVs for sale and have had for several months at least

I think that means blacks are actually ... black... :p

that does look very nice Sonny.

Another question, as im here; Has anyone used/got a soundbar? I hate cables/wires so dont want a cabled surround sound. Any tips on them?

My only sure fire bet was to do a little research into what brands are reputable and physically go to a few department stores to look at the flat screens themselves.

I felt that when it comes the finite differences you really can't tell if you put two decent sets alongside one another. The main items for me were:
1.) decent picture quality in comparison to others
2.) additional features (i.e. output types, interface, internet, display control, digital ATSC, etc)

For instance, you can get some lower priced flat screens that have an RJ-45 ethernet port which allow you to connect to the internet and browse online (inc. youtube, 4OD, etc!!). They also allow you to hook up through the router and setup a media connection to your PC. So if you have the Windows 7 OS, the media connection allows you to share a folder with the flat screen and you can play your movies/TV shows straight to your big screen.

which samsung models are ?

the ones ive looked at arent local dimming full array ? afaik the model that will do it is the 8500 series, but its not for sale in the UK yet ?

All of samsungs current LED and 3D range are not local dimming.

I'd go take a look at the panny G20 / V20 series tvs in some stores and see what you think - some people are more likely to see flickering etc on plasmas than others so best to be sure!

I'm looking to get one of the newest panny 50V20 sets as they look awesome - and of course have the performance to back that up ;)

Check out AVForums for user reviews and pro ones alike - best place for advice!

google:

Logic3 TX101 SoundStage 5.1 Surround Sound Cinema Speaker System / Sound Bar

this looks to be a fairly good one, especially on the bang for buck scale
