Hi there,

I am looking for a set of pc speakers, I dont have room for a subwoofer so a 2.1 set will be out of the question, nor do I have room for an amp and bookshelf speakers. I have got a budget of up to £150. The only 2.0 set that I have heard which sound half decent are the Bose Companion 2 speakers, is there anything better out there?

Thanks

Teufel concept b usb. very good imo, a tenner over your budget though. £160. Ive heard some t20's and they sound poor in comparison with these. The specs say the t40's go lower than the teufels, but the quality of bass i heard on the t20's theres no comparison, and especially how loud they go... also , though ive not heard them audioengine a2's are meant to be good... bare in mind however the teufels have a usb soundcard, which deffinately helps vs onboard...

-- or go amp + bookshelves..- which you said you dont have room for...

i have never listened to the bose, but ive seen them, and looking merely at their size ( and the fact it's bose) the teufels will sound better .. (waits to get shot down for such an assumptuous comment)

Thanks a lot for the suggestions!

I like the look of the Teufels, like the fact they have a separate amp that incorporates a soundcard, they seem like good value for money. they look like the next best thing to an amp and a pair of bookshelfs.

I will say though that the Bose companion 2's have surprising bass response from such a small cabinet.

yeh i think the teufels are very fairly priced, i got them on launch for £180, which was slightly pricy, they then went up to £200 which i would consider expensive, but at £160 i'd consider them very fairly priced. If i was being critical of them i would say you could find them overly analytical (they pick up noises etc you dont usually hear in songs, rock sounds the worst on them, there just too much going on, R&B and dance sounds good aswell as classical, although i've found the speakers pick up on the way classical music is recodred- you can hear it was recorded in a hall, rather than a studio-- it will pick up on poorly produced music), and ofcourse the bass isnt going to be anything like a subwoofer, although i find ( and i like bass) that its perfectly adequate ( i have bass on 2/3). You don't get the deep thudding like that of a subwoofer, but you notice the detail of the bass. Aside from that i have no complaints, i have never really gone above half volume, ( they go very loud), also you have about 2 weeks ( the site says 8, but thats for german customers i think) to order a collection and have it returned, free of charge, all your money back. (if you're relying on this double check first), and ofcourse you also get 2 years warranty on amp, and 12 years on speakers. You say you can't fit an amp and bookshelves, while these arent as big as an amp and bookshelves, they are sizeable. ( check the sizing to make sure you'l fit them in). Also the cable comes out about 3" from the back of the speaker (its thick cable) so you cant have them pressed against the wall. The usb cable isnt included in the package odly enough, so you could buy one off the site, or off overclockers. you've also gotta think about where to put the amp; the cables for the speakers arent majerly long, so it has to be on the same desk as the speakers really. Teufel advises you to put it under the monitor, but i dont really think its large enough to safely put a monitor on, so ironically you could be in the situation where getting a proper amp would have saved desk space(sitting a monitor on a large amp). You can see theres quite a lot of reviews for it now, the majority of them speak very highly of them, and generally the only complaints are that it (was) pricey, (when it was £180/£200) but i feel £160 is a good price. The stereo imaging is also something very good, which i have odly gotten used to. - I was using my headphones today playing L4D and it was so disorientating, i had no idea where sounds were coming from, - clearly i had got used to very good accuracy.

Thanks for the advise ojrules, luckily the amp will fit exactly under the stand on my dell , so that will save space, The speakers are quite big at 30cm tall but they are'nt that wide that wide so they are perfect, they are £160 but the p&p is rather steep at £20.

I have tried my hifi on the desk, it was cramped and sounded like crap, even after putting blu tack under the speakers they still sounded terrible, was getting a set of pc speakers as A; my hifi is on the other side of the room and B; I have a subwoofer connected which everyone in the house objects to in the evenings I find headphones uncomfortable after a while

hmm, didnt realise that it was £20 delivery on top of that, i must have got lucky to have delivery included in the £180 opening price. If that puts you off, look at the audioengine A2's; they have faultless reviews, and they look quite nice. just out of interest what hifi setup did you try?...

I used my cambridge audio s30's and cambridge audio 340a amp, both of the budget end of the spectrum.

I have been using audioengine a2 for pc and tv. The sound is really good, a lot better then any pc speakers ive used

if you did decide to get the teufels, i would be very interested in hearing your opinion of what they sound like in comparison with that hifi setup....
