I need to get to America....

Another question that maybe someone can answer. Are there any flights from europe that actually go to Bangor direct? I've just had a look and can't find any but maybe my google fu isn't up to it... :o

Just hire a rental car from Boston Logan.

That'll take about the same time as the coach will it not?

Problem is I'm not actually staying in Bangor. I'm being picked up and dropped off from there and I don't actually know how long it will take to get to and from the place i'll be staying...

Fly to Boston and then drive or take a coach.
Although if you rent a car you can get to your final destination quicker.

Find out where you're actually staying. Getting picked up from Bangor may not be the most practical solution for you..

There are no scheduled international direct flights. Says on their website.

Come on, what are you going for?
It's gotta be drugs, you're a spy or a terrorist (with it being the major in/out port for US troops)...

I'm super intrigued, tell us Mr. Cryptic!

Lets rephrase what I said. I know the place i'm going to however I doubt the people picking me up would be willing to go somewhere else to pick me up. :)

So make your own way to where you want to go. Could well be easier :p

Haha, I didn't think I was being cryptic... :p

In fact just google this "a walk in the woods" , or even stick it in the ocuk search and all will be revealed... ;)

Just found out the location I should be staying, a place called Garland, 30 miles west of Bangor, so max an hours drive I think. :)

I think from the looks of it Boston is the way to go. Was hoping you guys would be able to magic something up. :p

Thanks for the help. :D

You could hack the servers of the Pentagon and then confess it all. You'll be in the USA for free in no time :D

Hmmm, It may be free but I wouldn't be free... :p

Oh and Ahleckz if you haven't found out already i'll tell ya. ;)

I'm hopefully going over to the US to help do some trail maintenance on the Appalachian trail in Maine. They pick people up from the airport ad take you to their home base before going out in groups to thee "wilderness" and spending 5 days repairing trails. I'm going to do 4 weeks of it as it's a bit far to just do a week or two TBH. :)

Also one question i'm not too sure on (will probably email/phone the US embassy tomorrow), can I go over there on the Visa Waiver to do standard volunteer work or would I need another Visa type to do it? If so I need to get it sorted ASAP as they are supposed to take a few weeks...

My sister did some Camp America type thing there a couple years ago, I think I remember her mentioning Bangor airport at one point. The first year she went I think she flew to JFK and took a coach up. I can ask her for any specifics if you want.

That would be cool if you could. :)

I looked at JFK at one point but changed to Boston for some reason.

cheapflights.co.uk have some around the date you want for £710 (ish) depending on when you actually want to come back. Weirdly though theres 2 transfers in the one I looked at instead of just direct flight lol.

The odd things is loads of flights from the UK fly to various destinations using Bangor as a refuelling stop

I went : Norwich > Amsterdam > Detriot > orlando

Maybe you could do>

Norwich > Amsterdam > Detriot > Maine

Find an independant travel advisor in your town, I book my holiday independantly.

Haha I was going to say that too! But I'm certainly in favour of the fly wherever is cheap and drive to your destination. Anywhere within 500miles is perfectly sensible and 1000 at a REAL push for one day of driving. (Did 1030 one day (North Dakota to Indiana)

Edit> Also most Americans really don't think much about a 400 mile round trip to pick someone up from an airport so do talk to your friends. Gas is cheap and their attitude to driving laid back. Whilst here people would be peeved if you lived in London and were asked to pick up from Liverpool in the USA it's just the done thing to go on a little road trip to help out a friend. Certainly that's my experience anyway.

As already mentioned they won't be friends, they will probably be picking a few people up at the same time. Either way i'm not going to hire a car, it'll be way to expensive and would probably work out cheaper to fly from Boston (or wherever) to Bangor, and efinately cheaper to just get a bus that would take a similar amount of time. :p

On a slightly different note does anyone know of an email address I can use to ask about what sort of Visa I would need from the US Embassy? Hopefully when the organiser gets back to me she will let me know if I need anything other than the standard Waiver (I assume they have a few international volunteers) but I'd like to check myself.

Obviuosly they have this page http://www.usembassy.org.uk/ukaddres.html but nothing on there looks remotely relevant.

Also anyone else think they really need to update their website? This is the 21st century, not 1995... I can never find anything on it. :(
