Possible plans to reduce the drink-drive limit

Linky

I for one think it's a great idea. My mates and I have always had a policy of if you're driving you don't drink. Simple as that.

Discuss. :)

A good step . However I think they should introduce a "no tolerance" policy so if you drank anything alcholic no matter how small the amount , It would be illegal to drive.

•Random breath testing of motorists
BAD.
•Removing the right to a second breathalyser test at a police station
VERY BAD
•A 20mg alcohol limit for inexperienced drivers
UNDECIDED
•A new offence of driving with an illegal substance in the bloodstream at levels deemed impairing
VERY GOOD!

Random testing of anyone for anything is a horrible idea. We might as well test pedestrians on the street for alcohol in case they might be drunk enough to become disorderly.

Total and utter tripe, there is nothing wrong with the current limit and removing the right to a second test on a machine that is actually half accurate is a joke.

I barely drink, and I'm against it. All it will result in is a lot more people getting pulled over, and a lot more people getting ****ed in the arse when they are actually fine to drive.

While I agree something should be done to counter drink driving, lowering the limits even further isn't it.

Also an automatic 12 month ban is far far too harsh and could potentially ruin peoples lives just because they had a large glass of wine instead of a normal. That needs dropping to 1-3 months for minor offences.

The biggest difference to drink related problems could be solved by upping the legal age to drink. Instead of 18 raise it to 21 or even 25 that would certainly put a stop the binge drinking youths. Doesn't bother me at all, i've had maybe 1 can of magners in 7 months!

I don't have a problem with dropping it to 50mg and I wouldn't have a problem with them removing the right to a second test back at the station as long as they can demonstrate the accuracy of the test machine at the roadside.

What I do think needs looked at is the detection of drug drivers, which appears to be something that is missing at the moment.

This seams to come up every six months.

And there are two big problems.

1. No evidence is ever produced to support the hypothesis that there are a significant number of accidents caused by drivers who have been drinking, but not enough to put them over the limit.

2. The current method of measuring intoxication very hit and miss. There is no fool proof way to estimate how your blood alcohol level will increase with the amount you drink. It's also very hard to estimate how long until you could drive again.

If it'll prevent incidents I'm all for it.

While I can see the reasoning behind the random tests, I can see them affecting me. As I'm normally driving back in the early hours of the morning after being out with friends, and 18 year old + driving 2am in the morning = probably been drinking.

I think it would extraordinary unfair for someone to be prosecuted for drink driving and face points and ban, all because they had a dessert or choclates which contained some alcohol or had a meal which was cooked in wine. Or even, just rinsed their mouth with mouth-wash before leaving the house.

I like the idea of if your driving you don’t drink that’s fine. I mean that’s what I do.

But what happens if you still have alcohol on your breath or in your blood from the night before. If they have a "no tolerance" policy you would be ******. I know people will say you shouldnt drink that much the night before blah blah but your body doesn’t always discharge alcohol at the same rate all the time so you could think and feel your fine and get screwed.

I was told that as a guide an adult male will process 1 unit of alcohol an hour and a women would process 1/2 unit an hour. Pending on height and size (I cant confirm if this is correct or not). Taking this into account you have 4 pints standard 2.0 units beer and have 8 hours sleep as a male you should be ok (of course if you body processes at the same rate when sleeping). But have 5 pints and drive for work the next morning you could be automatically banned seems crazy. But meh my example is really bad but thats my thinking behind why I think the new rules could be bad if put in place.

And getting rid of the second test at the station is crazy. I mean as unlikely as it was they have to ensure the results are the same or about right.

Simple don't drink the night before?

Well if you dont drink its that simple. If you do and use your car 7 days a week like a lot of people its not that simple.

Just smoke loads of dope instead. Judging by what I have seen on those Road War programs the Police always let drive away even if they can smell it and our caught in possession.
