Hey all,

Looking for a 50mm prime for low light gigs and portraits. ect..

Want to spend around £100 max. I have been looking at the Sony 50mm F.1.8 and a second hand Minolta 50mm F1.7 so far but not sure what would be the better option? Or are there better available that I have missed?.

Thanks.

I've got the Minolta 50mm f1.7 and it's great. The thing you should look out for is that there are 2 versions of it, old and new(er). The newer one stops down while retaining a more circular aperture, and thus more round bokeh. It also has marginally better control of lens flare, due to a better coating on the lens element.

They are optically near identical though. I have the old one and it's still a really great lens for the money. I wish I knew then what I do now!

I would be interested in this as well, though I had only looked at the sony so far.

ohh and I believe the cash back offer on the sony finishes around the end of this month, might be worth remembering

Not really sure why Canon and Nikon are thought of so highly, well at least in the entry level dslr market. Their offerings seem so basic when considered next to the Sony's, people just stuck in their ways I suppose.

Anyway before I drag Photography in to a GD style flame war does anyone have any experience of the Sony 50mm or any of the 3rd party offerings

got the old minolta 50mm F1.7 here on my A300 and whenever I am indoors it never lets me down, half decent lighting means no flash, tack sharp from F4 and cheap

Before I sold all my SLR gear I owned the Minolta f1.7 & a Sony A100.

Its fast, sharp and built well unlike Canon's 50mm f1.8 which I have witnessed simply falling apart.

Having not owned the Sony SAM 50 f1.8 I can't compare but I certainly wasn't left wanting with mine.

Thanks all, think I will hunt around for a good price on the Minolta :)

@ChazHurst.. How would I distinguish between the two lenses? And is there much of a price difference?

hmmm, nuts, I seem too have referred to an article I read somewhere but didn't bookmark... This article mentions that lens but is primarily about another one.
