Sony forced to pay for removing other O/S Support on PS3

If you advertise a certain feature i.e. linux OS and then remove it someone could argue they bought it for that feature and demand a refund.

Sony are on dodgy grounds.

lol are you fing serious? Which idiot would buy a ps3 for linux when linux is free? That won't hold up in court due to it being retarded.

I certainly wouldn't ***** £200+ up the wall purely to use a p.o.s OS on a console.

I've been using Ubuntu for the past few months after being a windows user for 12 years. I will never use another microsoft OS again.

Only if the EULA can be shown to not be a binding contract.

Aye and this is where I can see Sony being on quite firm ground.

Surely then the end user has to prove they only used the product for that feature/it was a major feature to them.

To return the product for a full refund of the original purchase price is fair enough i guess, but to be just given money but to be allowed to continue to use a product due to the removal of an extremely unused feature is just mental.

I agree and I certainly didn't buy my PS3 for linux but just looking at threads such as http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=13554833 and you can see some people do take it more seriously. For them to be told they can't use it any more and play online could be grounds for complaint.

I don't believe for a second that Other OS was at any more risk of being compromised than it was 3 years ago when the PS3 launched - Sony just jumped at the opportunity to to dump a feature that no longer sat with their greater vision for the PS3 citing Geohot as the excuse. So where's the custom firmware he said was coming? Guess he wasn't close at all to breaking the PS3... :o

I think what gets most peoples backs up is the fact you were given no choice at all - if you wanted to keep using OtherOS you basically lost all other functions. A far better way of handling it would have been doing something like giving you a choice between OtherOS or access to PlayStation Network - but still allow you to install the latest firmware so you wearn't prevented from playing new games or watching new Blu-ray titles.

So would I, it's still not a p.o.s though :p

Perhaps I was a bit too hasty calling it a p.o.s then. I'm sure it's very useful, just not for me. :)

Rob, have you been using Steam on Linux? Didn't know it was supported, I thought games were a no-no? :)

Wasnt Linux on PS3 one of the best ways of copying blurays\PS3 games?

Im sorry but I'm all for getting rid, I hate piracy. Yes legit users will suffer, But rather them than the entire scene once\if the Ps3 is cracked due to allowing users to run free in the OtherOS feature.

What about when piracy is possible in GameOS, do we get rid of that too ?. Both modes would need exra hardware hacking so killing OtherOS was just a lazy way of killing a potential problem instead of fixing the flaw.

Meh - I'm not happy they removed it as it was a feature, but, truthfully, I don't "care" either. It was something I'd think to myself "I should try it out at some point" but that never actually happens.

Thats not an advertisment - just the manual so not really a great example...

ps3ud0

Did you actually read the web site - it's clearly advertising PlayStation Open Platform providing details of what it consists of in addition to a manual on how to use it. A number of high level people within the company touted the feature around and before launch explaining how the Open Platform gave them the edge over their rivals. I really don't see how people can argue that OtherOS wasn't advertised - it may not have been in the TV ads but it was certainly advertised to the demographic that was interested in this sort of functionality...

And the EULA will clearly state they can add remove features as they wish.

If you want someone to blame, blame that Geohot idiot for boasting about it.

what do you expect? Sony to sit by and let hacking/piracy run rife on their system like the 360?

They closed a security hole on the console, get over it.

Why not? Every user who accpeted it, accepts Sony's terms and condtions.

Are you serious? Do you even know how far Geohot got? You're making yourself out to be a blithering idiot.

Because a EULA cannot infringe on the rights of the consumer, for a start. The bottom line is we won't know until this is tested in court - and this is clearly going to drag on for a number of months yet.

Go on then, care to enlighten us? If he got 'so far' where's the custom firmware to re-enable OtherOS, or the one to run unsigned code?

Thats kinda the point being made... He didnt get that far. The machine was a mess, hooked up to alsorts. No way for realistic use at present.

The point is though, it had been done. Sony saw it had been done, and how. So they closed the gap, before it was taken advantage of. Good on them

I don't really play games on my pc anymore. I have too many games on my PS3 I want to play and there aint much on the pc these days... untill Crysis 2 anyway.

I still have windows 7 installed on another partition but I haven't logged into in months. I just prefer ubuntu. Its so much better to use. Once you get over the learning curve that is.

To balance that out, I've had Ubuntu before, and I will never use a Linux client ever again. None of the casual things I wanted to do with it worked properly out of the box like it did with Windows, and the official Ubuntu forums are chock full of the same complaints. I can't sort my subwoofer out (the alta mixer can't disable it so I had an almighty bass on every single sound), chat clients won't work, no games work on it, folder system is crap, updating is horribly awkward and not so user-friendly... I could go on and on. I seriously gave it a chance but it's just a horrible OS that's about as inviting as Antarctica.

Windows 7 is vastly superior. I can't even _imagine_ Ubuntu on a limited system like the PS3. I bet it would have been slow and clunky as hell.
