Not quite sure how to describe this but on hd playback on films and video sequences in games I have noticed I "fine" mist of dots over the screen.

I will try and upload pictures later.

Now, my computer never used to do this and I have only noticed it recently after buying Battlestar on HD. Then I noticed it in cut sequences in games as well. Normal gaming is fine and so is the desktop. The problem is there no matter which program I use for playback of the film.

My problem is since the last known time when this has not occured, I have reinstalled windows, added a 9800GTX as a physx card and moved on at least 5 driver versions for the 5850.

My google skills have failed me, mainly due to the fact I can't really describe the effect properly (and no guarantee that anybody else who has suffered with it describes it the same)

So I could spend days if not weeks trying out different versions of cards/drivers etc to try and find the answer so thought it was worth a punt to ask on here?

Any ideas ocuk gurus?

blueray and 1080p films show the film grain much more than dvd's do

it's not a problem as such, it's just showing the true image of the film

if you google 'blueray grain' you will find much more information

reducing gamma or contrast will help to reduce the visibility of the grain

Ah. Perhaps it's just down to Battlestar been bad - it's really noticable in the space scenes on the blackness of space :(

Also just a coincidence that I am playing a game atm with hd cutscences which has equally appauling grain then :(

At least I know what it is and perhaps can play with my graphics card/monitor settings to reduce it now.

Cheers for the prompt answer.:D

Unfortunately many directors think it's a good idea to take pristine digital transfers and add film grain to make it look like "old film footage". Sometimes this can look fantastic, but sometimes it just looks like a mess. Especially in the cinema on a massive screen ¬_¬

Although as far as I'm aware, modern digital cameras still have a little bit of grain to the image. I'm not very knowledgeable about cameras, however.

Video encoding in games is often also terrible (developers rarely seem to realise that SWARMING COMPRESSION BLOCKS and using crappy/old CODECS like BINK or mpeg2 LOOK BAD) and this can sometimes kind of look like grain.

And some DVDs exhibit plenty of film grain. The new Star Wars transfers have plenty of grain (much of it was cleaned up, but Lucas asked for a small amount of be left in), and frankly look beautiful :)
