£800 Budget

im ignoring the original request but this is my attempt at the best performance within the budget. the soundcard is there because if your watching blu-rays and gaming you really cant go without one even on headphones.

Dual Core Phenom II beats this Athlon II X4 in gaming - fail.

You'd need a really decent headphones to hear the difference. Most "mainstream" ones will do fine with an on-board audio.

only in games that support 2 cores and more and more games are now starting to support quads, at £80 you cant say no to a quad over a dual anymore and with the soundcard the fidellity of it is quite noticeable and and the extra effects of eax are very noticeable in games and useful especially in multiplayer fps.

both quads and only a small difference considering the price difference

He has a 19" 1280x1024 monitor, frankly £800 is overkill for building a gaming PC when it only has to run games at that resolution. I3/PII X2, 4Gb DDR3 and a HD5770 is all he needs and even that could be argued to be to much.
