mk3 Golf gti 1.8t or the 2.0?

Thank you, these are the answers I'm after.

Except its actually not that useful to you - if he owned it for 7 years then he presumably bought it when it was still reasonably new and was therefore in control of exactly how it was run and looked after from an early age right through his 7 year ownership period.

This is COMPLETELY different to buying a shabby one at 11 years old from the absolute bottom of the market. It's a bit like somebody claiming that the Alfa 147 is reliable because he had a brand new one that didnt break..

I could quite easily put more money towards it

Then do so, or buy something else. Seriously. Even Matt82 had 33% more money than you and STILL ended up with a 150k mile 10 year old one that needs a load of work.

You cant buy a passable Mk4 1.8T GTI for 1500 quid.

but i don't want to, thats going on other things...

Yes, its going on other things like the soon to exist constant money pit of a shabby nail on your drive :p

There are about 100,000 better cars for £1500 than a Mk4 Golf 1.8T.

back to the engines. 1.8t over practically any other mk4 option. as long as the engine has been looked after properly, they will last indefinately, turbo included.

you will have to verify the history of each car individually. i looked at one "low miler" with 86k and enginewise it needed far more attetnion than the 150k mile car i eventually bought

The garage I went to look at the Mondeo at yesterday had a 3 Door 1.8T with 80k on it up at 2k,

someone at work has an r reg st24 of which i was a passenger the other day. i know it's all down to personal opinion but i find the cabin of a mk4 golf superior to any mondeo or focus (2 cars which the golf is often compared to in a 'what should i buy' topic) much nicer lines and build quality

well, ive not been in any 150k mile mondeos lately (i dont need to get taxis that often) but the interior of my golf is rattle/squeak free

Guys - its ok to buy a cheap car. You don't need to feel ashamed. You dont need to think up some daft name to make people go 'Oh, its ok, its only a snot gap about runner'. Nobody here will judge you because you can only afford a 1500 quid car. Lots of people here have 1500 quid cars, and of those that dont many of us used to. It's ok.

/weeps, sniff, sniff.

Can I get a manly hug Fox?

This was from new, serviced every 10,000 (even had a second service book because the original ran out of stamp space). It had two cambelt changes
during its life.

Couldnt even give it away with 190k on the clock, finally used a a part-ex.

If you still want one ONLY buy from VW drivers mag or somewhere like http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/ because it will have a serious amount of miles for your budget.

nope, i dont mind at all.

Go for it then.

Get on the MK4 forums and look for the bits you want to change. Make sure you get a decent runner thats been properly looked after though or I wouldn't be comfortable with high miles.
I've not spent much (considering) and I've managed to get full leather recaros for my bora as well as a short shifter kit, cruise control and a pretty decent stereo setup

The only thing I haven't brought through a meet or a forum is my wheels, tyres and coilovers. And the remap.

Lucky swine, mine aint lol.

I'd up the budget to 2k and then you'll get an early S/T/V reg in reasonable shape for the money, be prepared to swap a few things to get it tip top but it's easily doable.

The 1.8t is a good engine, I'd only personally consider a PD130 diesel otherwise, but they cost a lot more to buy.

Check out www.golfgtiforum.co.uk and www.uk-mkivs.net for buying guides, common faults etc and if this is of any use it's what I collated and printed out to check cars I went to view: www.illusional.co.uk/stuff/golfguide.doc

the guy next to me at work now fancies a mk4, he was talking about a pd130. for one of those youre looking at ATLEAST a 50% premium over mine and you wont get anywhere near the spec and youll have a dag dag dag

we worked out that at our mileage it will take about 3 years to recover the saving in diesel cost, but then the car will sell for a premium
