Surfing

I honestly dont get surfing at all, and especially not in this country.

I wish i did get it as its supposed to be an awesome hobby, but to me it just looks ridiculous, maybe if i lived in hawaii i might be tempted but not where i live.

That said, just 2 minutes down the road from me there is a thriving surfing community http://magicseaweed.com/Redcar-Saltburn-Surf-Report/24/

It looks ridiculous? In what way?

Guessing he/she means beause of the weather, lack of waves and freezing cold sea.

In exactly the way that Guest describes.

All i ever see is the surfers sat on their boards floating around waiting for a 2 foot wave to come crashing down.

Like i said, i have nothing against surfing in general, i am sure its awesome, however i am not too sure how well this country's climate lends itself to it.

Learn to duck? :p

Learn the etiquette of the waves, have seen too many injuries caused by kayakers who cannot control their actions for this to be joked about.

Half of surfing is the relaxation and peace you get from sitting in the line up waiting for waves, it's very good for the soul :)

Sorry, was intended as tongue-in-cheek. I don't kayak surf a lot but when I spent a week in Cornwall my priority was to not hit anyone, and enjoy the wave as a 2nd thought. Glad to say I succeeded in this, and no-one from our group hit any surfers.

Perhaps on some of the more popular beaches there needs to be some segregation implemented / rope lines in place? Thoughts?

As in South Shields sort of area? Surfing on the Tyne and dodging ferrys sounds fun!

It is ;)

As is surfing at Roker seafront, the waves build bigger the closer you get to the harbour walls!

I've got some photos at home somewhere, I'll stick a couple up tonight.

Way to miss the point Dude.

Surfing is more than just riding waves it's about being at one with your surroundings & your self.

Best thing to do is hook up with a few Dudes on a beach & let them show you the way as you will be Upright on one of there boards a lot quicker than some piece of Nub crap you get stitched up with in a tourist board shop.

I have to say though I never saw you as a Surfer but if you do go then I was wrong about you. :)

handy...if you like cracked bones. Saying this i've surfed for about 10 hours total and the waves at bondi were that big they sucked up all the water. If you didnt get on top of the wave then it pounded you into the sand. I found this out a couple of times and it was pretty scary

Waves were also bigger near sharp rocks somewhere in new zealand. I didnt know this but followed all the pros and found out later. Good job I didnt get hit by a huge wave there!

I fancy getting into surfing. Done a lot of bodyboarding, but I don't have a wetsuit or board anymore.

I'm in Plymouth and I have my car, so I may look into it this term :)

People surf in bournemouth. In actual bournemouth I don't see that many people doing it and the waves don't look too great. The artificial reef is a bit east in Boscombe I think. Apparently it failed. You could give it a try though.

Dont come to Bournemouth if you want surfing, the £3m "reef" is nothing more than a joke. Kimmerage bay is epic though. and well worth the extra check for good waves.

Tried it when I was a teenager.
Hired a board, started paddling out, caught a big wave, board smashed me in the face and I nearly drowned..

Never been back on one since

(Constantine on Trevose head for the record)
