So the plan was to get a free Desire on a 18 month contract with my current Flext30 tariff. However they didn't really seem to want to keep me. The phone call lasted all of 3 minutes.

I think it's because when they asked what reason I was cancelling and then told them it was because I saw a deal elsewhere, they asked what network it was with and I said T-Mobile. So in their minds... I'm still staying with them.

All I want is a Nexus One damnit!

I have no idea what to do now. I could just buy a cheap £20 sim only contract and then buy the Nexus One from the US (£££) or I actually get the deal I saw for 300 minutes, unlimited texts and web for 18 months, free Desire for £30 a month. Then sell it, lose more money to ebay and paypal, then buy the Nexus One.

I know people will go "Why not just keep the Desire?" but I want the Nexus One. So nerrrrr.

What to do, what to do.

lol. I'm not gutted as such. I would have had to cancel anyway. I was just hoping they would offer something to stay. But they didn't even try.

Weird isn't it, did the same with the g/f's vodaphone contract, phoned up with a good T-Mobile deal for a desire, expecting them to match it and they just cancelled it! Didn't even ask why or ask if I was sure!

You can phone them up and cancel your cancelling, but you won't get a good deal by doing so!

No disrespect guys but if you call them asking to cancel your contract what do you expect them to do?

Why not ask to transfer your existing contract or early upgrade if you just want to change phone?

The tariff I was on isn't offered any more. I'm also out of my 18 month contract so if I want to upgrade my phone it costs £170 for a desire. So basically it's cheaper to start a new contract. Which is strange, as you would have thought they would have known that so offered the phone free to keep me.

Normally when you cancel you get put through to retentions who give you deals to stay. That didn't happen. At all. They didn't even offer me the upgrade offers that their online website did.

Who said anything about the Froyo update? I'm after the Nexus one because I prefer it over the desire.

Well, considering it's going to cause you hassle, I can't really see much in the way of good reasons? Especially as you dont seem to be interested in the updates?

I'm just wondering is all, if it's the trackball you like then fair enough :p

Its a well known fact that the best deals come through retentions, you would have to be stupid to pay the advertised prices!

I will be honest. It is the little things. The light up trackball. The charging points on the phone. The nice dock. The fact that getting root is a one line job. It will be more fun for me than the Desire. I also don't really like the look of the Desire.

That's fair enough. I just wondered :)

I thought about it a bit myself but I'll hang fire as the development for the Desire is gaining momentum at the moment.

Don't really want to get both, although... hmm... no, the girlfriend would shoot me :p

In the spirit of this thread, has anyone got any tips on the best way to wrangle this type of thing, I've always been pretty crap at it.

Just phone up retentions (or get passed through from upgrades) and when asked why say you haven't been given the deal you want, or there is a better deal with ANOTHER company (you can make it up if you want, just don't be silly). Try to be slightly vague, just in case they can offer you a better deal than you want.

Once they offer you a deal either say a downright no (if it's not good enough) or sound non comittal ("it's a bit better but still not sure" etc). See if they can then reduce their initial offer (or say something like "Drop the £50 for the new phone and that sounds good").

Worst comes to the worst you can always say no, ask for your PAC code and hope they ring you a day or two later to give a better deal (never done this but others have).

I would say, don't make up offers that don't exist, sure exaggerate a bit, but there is no point saying another company is going to give you the world, they will know your making it up!

2nd, know what you want, what the minimum offer you would accept is,

3rd, look at total contract cost, so Monthly fee X phone cost, don't be fooled by a shiny free phone with a high monthly tariff

4th Always ask for accessories just before you say yes, last two times I've done this I've had a 8gb memory card thrown in for free.

I just rang up to ask fi they could match my 800 mins, free texts, free internet, free emails and buy out of my contract with them by giving me a new phone and they said it isnt up to debate until september, also greeted by a chinese woman who couldnt even understand me!

Look up a plan/phone with another provider, for example when the iPhone was still exclusive to o2 I told Orange I wanted an iPhone so had to go to O2.

Be by a computer, have several models of new phones pulled up already. That way when they offer you one you can instantly eye it up and decide.

Hang up and try again if you aren't getting what you want. Don't bother saying goodbye, just hang up and phone again. Depending on how well they are doing, how much commission they need and how long they have worked there they can offer you higher or lower deals. So hanging up and trying again can well get you someone who's having a bad day and really needs to keep you to get that commission (= greater discount).

Thanks for the tips, should help me when I decide to get a desire/galaxy s and a reduced call plan.

lawl my mate did this, but with sky he wanted a free hd box and they just cut him off lol

i got my hero for £40 on my £15pm years old contract with free internet bolt on by saying i was offered better elswhere
