So the currency in Final Fantasy games is "Gil", but do you pronounce it gill or jill?

I've always pronounced it as "Gill", like fish gills seeing as the Japanese katakana for it is spelt "Giru". For those that don't know there is no "L" in the Japanese language so it is substituted with "R". Then there is the whole Gil from Gilbart thing in Final Fantasy IV.
