BMW 328

Thats a bit to much for me most of my driving is town driving and I do have to make some kind of sensible decision.

If "most of your driving is town driving", then surely your annual milage is low. So it matters not if you average 15MPG or 25MPG, if you do diddly squat milage then the costs are low regardless.

Somehow I don't see a BMW being the car for you if you are put off by such meager things as fuel cost.

Yes it is but I also have other factors to consider IE I am looking for a new job within 20 miles. I was told the straight 6 was economical compared to the old Honda 2.2 but it looks like I was ill informed

The last comment I dont really understand, you're either assuming I cant afford to run a BMW because I dont want something that will do low teens around town or they are really unreliable and/or expensive to service

 I would sooner walk plus the fact that I do a lot of town miles and diesels are not suited to that

What?
Lots of torque at low revs, they can roll along happily in gear without stalling, and they're much more economical on the urban cycle than petrols..

On longer journeys (i.e. A roads, dual carriage way and motorways) you should be getting high 30s.

You've got to look at the bigger picture of running costs and servicing though.

Diesels don't like short journeys, which is why dealers have people going back with problems as they don't get warmed up enough.

I know diesels arent to everyone's tastes or needs, but surely for someone who is concerned with fuel economy they are worthwhile considering?

Fair enough if you dont like them, but why would they not be suited to town miles?

Around town doesn't necessarily mean short journeys.

However, I've just remembered the whole DPF nonsense so yes, you probably have a point from that angle.

Please dont try to educate me on diesels, I hate the things, i'm using the word HATE here.

Yeah I appreciate that, I have owned a fair few cars but never a BMW but I thought they were a little more economical than they actually are

I am not concerned with fuel economy its just a factor

EGR, that stupid DMF or DPF thing or whatever its called, I am ignorant to them and honestly not interested in the slightest

Fair enough, thats one reason of many that I dont like them I also dont have any interest in talking about diesels further

I'd like to know your reasoning.

I had an irrational hatred of them too, based on older experiences and my parents preconceptions.

Then I bought one.

As a 325 owner... I'd say go for the 330 or choose a different car.

The 325 is more than close enough to the 330 in both economy and performance... so you might as well get the 3ltr. Especially if you are after one for 5k as a dog is a dog regardless of engine.

To be honest, it will depend on how you drive your car to what figures you get. I avergae ~25, if you drive it softly you will easily reach above 30, drive it hard and you will drop below 20.

In regards to getting "everything as standard", remember these cars are old now so gadgets are minimal, you will probably get the same gadgets in many other cars. Also sport wheels are 18" as standard I think, not 17".

If you are worrying about MPG, don't. Just drive smoothly and you should be able to cope.

how the hell can you be confused by BMW model numbers? lol

its series + engine Litres

3 series 2.8L = 328
8 series 5.0L = 850
5 series 3.5L = 535

be glad Nvidia didn't design the numbering system for them ^^

Care to explain the 523i?
Or indeed the 116i, 118i, 335i, 335d, X5 4.0d, 550i..

You're wrong, but I'll let someone else put the details in. :D

What litre is a 325i? What litre is a 116i? etc. etc.
