BMW 328

how the hell can you be confused by BMW model numbers? lol

its series + engine Litres

3 series 2.8L = 328
8 series 5.0L = 850
5 series 3.5L = 535

be glad Nvidia didn't design the numbering system for them ^^

Because someone told me differently, I didnt know they were full of crap did I! And I didnt pop out of my Mum on my birthday with the knowledge of BMW model numbers

He was pointing out that ubersonic was no expert either and actually defending you if anything. There are lots of BMW models that don't have the actual engine size in the name.
 
They used to be the engine size, and then they started changing them to fit in the range in various places.
The old x25i had 192 PS in M50 guise and then when the M52 was brought in the 2.5L was called the x23i and had 170PS. Perhaps it was so that people wouldn't think it was as powerful as before as the x28i was the most powerful 6 cylinder at the time. However, it had the same power as the outgoing 2.5L

Now it's just used to show where it stands in the range. There is some logic behind it but don't take it literally as you would have in the past.
Mercedes are the same. They used to be accurate but they just seem to pluck random numbers out of a hat :p
 
It's not really that new though, even the E30 316i for example had a 1.8 engine, and I think some 325 models had a 2.7.

EDIT: and even the E21 316i was a 1.8!

I'm a bit confused about this right now I need to have a proper read of it all when I get home and then read into the model numbers and specs properly. I do still want to drive one but a revvy 4 cylinder suits my commute more at present but I just fancy a change TBH
 
It's not really that new though, even the E30 316i for example had a 1.8 engine, and I think some 325 models had a 2.7.

No worries, I just wanted to have a go at ubersonic for being cocky whilst also being completely inaccurate. FWIW, the 850i was only a 5.0 V12 until 1994 :p

Basically, the 6 cylinders are where its at, but if you don't want 20mpg then it's not for you.

The 4 pot E46 really isn't anything special. If you want a revvy 4 pot, look elsewhere.

Or indeed the 116i, 118i, 335i, 335d, X5 4.0d, 550i..

Touché, at this point a lot of people would either disappear like batman or start flaming in self defence but ill admit my information was invalid (but not wrong, its not my fault BMW have abandoned their own numbering scheme ^^) my apologies
 
The numbering system wasn't really 'abandoned' though, it was never a hard rule in the first place. The original 3 series (E21) 316i with a 1.8 engine came out in 1975!
 
Yeah if I did go for a BMW it would have to be a Sport as I like the way they sit as standard

I am going to advertise my Civic at the end of the month again for less than last time and hopefully it will go this time

No, they haven't. The numbering scheme is simple. The power of the car relates to the number. The 323 is a 2.5 but with the power they'd expect a 2.3 to output, same goes for all the other cars too. The engine may be a 2.0 and marked as 318, this indicates that the power is equal to that of a 1.8. etc. etc.
